Looking to improve my knowledge so we can make a good, affordable choice. We are looking to get a rig in the spring. We are deebating between a class A or a 5er. Leaning towards a class A, but want to make the best choice. So here are my questions:

1. Do most of the major auto insurers also cover rv's?

2. Are the cost for a MH and a 5er about the same for the same length?

3. Is it less expensive to go thru a specialized insurer?

That will give me a starting place on insurance.

Be sure to follow the education process of a newbie.

Good questions and the only answer I can give is a definate mabe on 1 and 3. On #2 I really have no idea as I've never had a 5th wheel. I've just started the process of researching as I have the RV with same company, State Farm, as I do the daily drivers and they are high. I've checked the RV alone with GMAC and found they are just over half of what I paid State Farm. I've heard on this forum that Progressive is even less than GMAC, so I will be continuing the search between now and the end of January.

Carl,

There are several Insurance brokers around who specialize in RV's. I use Miller Insurance Agency and I give them a call annually & my agent shops around among the companies who market RV insurance. 800-622-6347 is the # for Millers. Cheryl Howeth has always done a good job for me.

I can also answer 1 and 3 as I have never had a 5th wheel. Yes, most cover motorhomes. You need to check out as many companies as you can tolerate. I just updated my insurance on our 2003 Class A.
Annual premiums I was quoted:
State Farm: $ 412.31 (w/multi vehicle)
GMAC (Good Sam) $900.00
Geico $901.40
Hartford (AARP) $ 549.15
Progressive $1,038.00

I have my 2001 Bounder fully covered with Progressive...$340 a year. Not sure why richvkansas is getting such a high quote unless he's full timing...which WILL raise the cost of insurance.

they all vary...but I can say
#2 should be higher on a Class A or C motorhome....liability will be on those whereas the liability on a tow behind is on the tow vehicle......so basically your paying for comp and collision on a tow behind

I've used High Sage Marketing for 20 or more years. They are a broker specializing in RV insurance. During this period of time they have suggested three maybe four different insurance companies that I have used. When an insurance company raises the rates they look around for similar coverage and compare rates and suggest the lower rate if all other items are similar. They are in San Diego area - maybe Escondido - I'll look up the telephone number is you are interested.

We are Fulltimers, so we sort of have different deal going, and we are from Texas and I think maybe our insurance board people may smoke a little too much Peyote, but I have had two different companies over seven years one was a NATIONAL company who were great until I actually ad the gall to actually file a hail claim, then it took them 2-1/2 YEARS to get it resolved.

The company I am with now is a very progressive company and a steel post jumped out in front of me. They got right on it took care of things lickety split.

One thing was that I had an AGENT with my present company who you call first. Our agent is PoliSeek which is a strange name but they pretty much deal exclusively with RVs and I have been really impressed with their work.

That's what I know.

There are some website so you can investigate the Ratings of the various insurance companies.

They rate every aspect of the insurance business. IE: rates, payouts, happiness of customers, etc.

remember this.....saving $$$$ on premiums is just 'some' of what you want. Timely, fair, and hassle free claims is what you reallly want.

I have been with the biggest insurance company in America for over 30 yrs, with ALL of my needs, even life insurance. NO other company has come close to the rates I get. I have a good driving record, took a driving safety course, and only have a few claims.

State Farm. Full coverage for my RV is $500 yr. Full timing. AND.....in California.

Back when I had moved to Florida for a few years, the rate there was 1/3 cheaper than Calif. And then in North Carolina was 1/3 cheaper than Florida. all State Farm.

Location of your Domicile (home) is key to your rates.
