Giving up on toilet seals
My factory original toilet seal lasted 9 months before starting to leak. Had a new seal professionally replaced and it lasted 8 months before leaking. Cost with labor is not cheap and I am not about to do it myself. Thinking about just living with a toilet that will not hold water. Are there any other options?

Which toilet do you have?
I am fighting a 16 year old vacuum flush now...but am getting closer to success... hope to get another 16 years of service out of it..

Don’t understand. We have had our toilet for 3 years and full time and no problem. Toilet before that we had for 4 years and no problem with the seal. What are you putting down your toilet?[emoji33][emoji15][emoji13]

I believe the hardness of the water you use has a lot to do with how long your toilet seal lasts.

Every month or so take a Q-tip and clean under the lip of the half ball seal, then give the exposed half ball and under the lip of the seal a coating of silicone lube..

I've had RV's since 1968 and have never replaced nor cleaned a seal yet. Guess I'm just lucky.

I am having somewhat the same problem but realized early on the real problem was not the seal but the wife.
Failure to use enough water and not holding the pedal down long enough to get the paper to drop completely causes the seal to get clogged with TP. Since I can't cure the wife and it's too late to get a new one I just bought a stiff round toilet brush and every time I go in there I open the valve insert the brush in the hole and rotate it to clean the seal. Every couple of weeks I use plumbers grease on the seal.

Try this. With water supply off drain bowl. Add CLR covering bottom and seal. Let stand. If level drops due to leaking add more CLR. Couple hours seems to be good longer would be better. Was headed for third seal in less than one year when I started using CLR. Have almost two years of fulltime use on current seal and no leaks.

Ditto what he said. Except I've only had an RV since 1998.

Its really not hard to change the seal - granted I have an old "traveler" but it was easy. You are removing the top of the sealing mechanism and don't expose yourself to "inside" of the pipe going into the black tank. The ball and everything that closes off the pipe is still sealed when you remove the toilet. The seal is very cheap and it sits an top of the ball. If you can't replace it in an hour the first time, and faster any additional time, something is wrong.

I had the same problem – took the toilet out of the MH and brought it home - disassembled and installed new kit – seal, ball, etc. few months later leaking again. THEN I read all the posts here on iRV2. Now every couple of months when the wife says “it’s not holding water.” I shut off the water, don a surgical glove take a paper towel and completely open the ball valve and rub the towel all around the underside of the seal, you won’t believe the “stuff” that sticks there – after clean, I apply a thin coat of plumbers grease. Works fine and holds water for a couple of more months until I do the same process. Takes about 5 minutes. We have very hard water, so some of the “stuff” is calcium.

After 5 years our toilet seal went bad, so I installed a new seal that lasted 3 months. I read on this forum to pour vinegar into the bowl (dissolves calcium) and let it sit for awhile and it has worked for last 6 months now. So since we clean the coffee maker monthly using vinegar, we now just dispose of the used vinegar in the toilet bowl and get double usage out of the vinegar!!
