Well, not all campgrounds allow them. There are some that charge extra for them. Some that charge even more extra for electric ones and some that only allow electric ones. But, they are handy and we take ours when we can.
My first piece of advice is to get insurance on it. All of the campgrounds ask for proof of liability insurance - you may want to set your coverage amount at what your favorite campgrounds require.
My second piece is to decide what is a must have (like 4 seats) or what is a nice to have (like a specific color). It will be cheaper if you buy one that looks like it just came off of a golf course, but they aren't very cool!
My wife gave me a budget, I researched and researched and we went to a dealer's lot. I walked to the ones that looked like they had just come off of a golf course and she yelled, "Why are you looking at those ugly ones? I want that blue one over there!" I said, "Triple the budget you gave me, honey, and it's yours!"
We paid about $3,500 for a lifted golf cart with knobby tires, rear seat, roof, windshield, cool color, hitch, and light kit...she had told me I had $1,000 - $1,200 to spend!
We have had two Club Car DS carts and have been happy with both of them. Why 2? The first one (the cool, lifted one) was stolen. We did not have insurance on it.
I wanted to buy from a dealer because I knew nothing about golf carts. I will still buy from a dealer because now I know a little bit about golf carts. And, I found an awesome dealer - when we called him to tell him to be on the look out for our stolen golf cart, he said, "When are you coming by to pick up your loaner while you sort all of this out?" We kept a loaner for a month and bought the second cart from him as well.

We haul ours on a 5' x 8' utility trailer. The rear seat requires that we remove the hitch and back it onto the trailer.
That is one of the reasons we will never return to Ocean Lakes RV park in Myrtle Beach. It's dangerous to be walking because of so many golf carts driven by children. It's the reason we did not attend the irv2 national rally in 14.
