So we're in the market for an electric golf cart to take with us to the Dog Shows. I'm checking local listings and doing my homework/research.

I have now removed the Oil Companies from the top spot on my list of price gougers, rip-offs and scam artists. These manufacturers want $5000-6000.00 for nothing more than a glorified go-kart? Really? Let's compare...I bought my son a rustfree 2000 F-250 Extended Cab 2wd SuperDuty with the 7.3 Diesel with 145,000 miles on it for $5000.00 just last year.

Their pricing is so high that even the 'used' market will bring $1000.00 for a 20 yr old golf cart which needs all new batteries to the tune of $600.00 more. Simply unbelievable.

I will now reconsider complaining about high pricing on other products after seeing the gouging that these golf cart manufacturers are capable of.

if you remember last year there was a tax credit on golf carts that was the time to buy
or find someone who bought one just because and you may find a deal

Check the used marked, 1,000 is not uncommon there. Less if it's a fixer-upper

Typically around $1500 will get you a very good used one. At least in this area of the country.

Edited: Stop by the golf courses as you travel and check out their "For Sale" board.

I would go with a gas cart. I have an Eazy Go gas that runs great. My neighbor has an electric, and even with new batterys, it won't pull a steep hill. $800 for batteries. If someone has a gas willing to trade, he's in. Can't use gas carts on golf courses in MO That's why the gas's are on the cheap. 4-5 year old for $1500-$1800

Up until a couple years ago we were building custom golf carts, mainly gas. When the demand switched to Rhinos we phased out. Used carts are available from golf courses for $1000-$2000. Cart dealers are a lot higher.
A lift kit, tires&wheels, new mats, pedals, windshield, dash, upholstery, lights, and paint or a new body can easily add up to $3000+.
If you're interested in electric the 36volt models use six 6 volt batteries available at Costco for about $75 each.
The 48 volt use six 8 volt..... more expensive.
I'd strongly recommend a gas cart but many state or federal parks prohibit them in campgrounds. Gas carts are largely maintenance free except for an annual oil change, lube, air filter and every few years fuel filter and plugs. EZ-GO has proved the easiest to work on or modify for us.
Buggies unlimited sells retail parts&custom parts if you want to get ideas.
Our normal carts started at $6000.

Yea we have to stay electric. Many of the areas we go for shows won't allow gas carts anywhere near the show areas due to the noise/fumes etc. Anything I find under 1500.00 needs batteries replaced, at another (minimum) $500.00. Blah. I should make carts! Must be one helluva markup for some steel tubing a molded fiberglass shell, an electric motor and a speed controller. Amazing how that costs as much as 2000 SuperDuty Diesel. lol

You stated golf carts are only glorified go carts. Well price a decent go cart and you will see they to are expensive. Keep an eye on Craigslist as previously stated and you will find one in your area. As winter comes they get cheaper in the North. Good Luck

I don't know where you live but here in Florida there tends to be alot of golf carts for sale. They were were either used for golf or more often to run around the senior communities. "only driven by a little old lady..."

Why do some people insist that everything is price gouging? It is a very common complaint on RV sites. If you think an item is to expensive don"t buy it. Just quit complaing.

Yea, like every used RV add states "no pets, and non-smokers."
