Have used various brands of electric drip coffee makers since they first appeared. At home, I use a Phillips 12-cupper with an insulated carafe, so there's no hotplate to burn the coffee as I work my way through the morning.

In the RV, I have a 4-cup one with a glass pot and a hotplate, but I brew 2 cups at a time and usually drink it dry before it has a chance to burn.

For the coffee itself, I've found the 3-lb bags of whole-bean coffee at Costco to be very good tasting and exceptional value. I usually get either the San Francisco dark roast or the Guatemalan. It's about $14 for 3 pounds, which makes the $9.99 a pound stuff at the grocery store look ridiculous.

BTW, DW is an ardent tea drinker - doesn't like coffee. She gets Brooke Bond PG tips teabags.

I too prefer Guatemala ....Aldi's carries a nice line of whole bean Guat's, Costa Rican. For a nice bodied gourmet cup you want to achieve 1.5% solids...your normal coffee is 1%...this real makes a difference in your finished product. 2z of coffee with 60z of water will achieve 1z solids( a hi yield like Folgers would be greater)....for 1.5z Gourmet product you would use 2.5z to 3z to 60z of water. Brew time should not be over 4 minutes too much longer will give over extracted bitter product. We recently picked up a Coffee Press which has a 32z capacity...we use 4 heaping scoops, if it is a little too full bodied we just add a little hot water. The actual raw cost between a low end green coffee like robusta vs quality arabica is not very much. The key is how the roaster blends, roast temp and grind. Before it was a trend in the 80's McDonalds had one of the nicest gourmet coffees in food service.

We make 12 cups from whole beans and it lasts until 10:00 AM. Those one cup things would not work for us.

Oooo..... You ARE hardcore about your caffiene. My wife has her pot, Cuisinart fresh grinder 12 cup, and I have mine, 4 + or - hazelnut preground. She drinks all of hers, and, I drink maybe one cup. That's at home. On the road we use a regular drip grind. I like instant when I'm in the MH by myself, wierd!

I actually have, I think 3 of those

1: The proctor Silex I mentioned above can use filters or Senso pods
2: Two Senseo units (I think may only have one) they are in storage though
3: Tasismo. Now that one I really like, provided you avoid the Starbucks discs. Those are . ... not good.

When we have access to good beans to grind, we use the Cold Brew method to make coffee extract. Keep the extract in the fridge and dilute with boiling water (makes the smoothest, most flavorful possible cuppa).

When out in the hinterlands, we drink Busteca Mexican Blend Instant.

Have had 2 Keurig's and love the coffee, but both went bad so now have a Cuisinart which still uses the Keurig cups. When we leave for a trip, we just take it along. Very convenient for us.

Hi All:

Well, where I come from (North woods of Minnesota) coffee is called...."FINNISH PLASMA" !! One of the basic food groups.

Get my coffee wherever they have Millstone (or alternative brand) "COLOMBIAN SUPREMO" beans and a coffee grider. Set grinder on 'Fine' just above 'expresso', and place 2 or 3 extra pre-ground bags in freezer till needed. Also, use Cuisinart 12 cup percolator with carafe to keep it hot all day.

Cup of coffee with plain cake donut and LIFE IS GOOD!!

Steve

Ours went kaput about a month before warranty period ended. Tech walked me through extra cleaning step. Worked for a few months and then quit again. Called Keurig again and after much hassle finnaly got the point across that I had called prior to cut off date. She agreed and sent us a rebuilt one. Has worked great ever since.

We have a Contoure coffee maker, 10 cup. It bolts on under the cabanet. After it makes a pot of coffee it shuts it's self off. The made coffee is in a carafe which keeps it hot for hours.
We also use Starbucks French Roast beans which we fresh grind.

Another great reason to drink coffee! This morning on Fox news they reported on a study that concluded drinking up to 6 cup of coffee a day greatly reduces the odds of getting pancreatic cancer. Decaf or full strength- immaterial.

Fun thread! We're pretty serious about our coffee, but for me it's expresso all the way. Just to be on the safe side we have 3 coffee makers in the RV.

The first is an old fashioned full-sized pull-handle La Pavoni expresso maker. We've had it for 10 years and it makes a fabulous cup, but does suck up power like a beast so we only use it with hookups.

The second is a classic Italian stove-top expresso maker which we use for boondocking.

Our final line of defence is a French press. We used to use this for backpacking years ago and have it with us just in case.

We grind the beans fresh every day. Cuisinart at home and just replaced the RV cheap one with a new Mr. Coffee that has a regular brew and a strong brew. Grind it fine, but do it in bursts to prevent burning the grind. Trader Joes is good if you want to pick up a vary of roasts. It's our coffee tasting.
