I use a tape and an HB4 pencil I keep behind my ear. (No, the tape wasn't kept behind my ear, I could sense the wood burnin)
Been doing that as a carpenter for 40+ years.
Could never get used to one of those bulky flat carpenter pencils. Too thick of a line.

Les.

I am amazed that you can be that accurate. I like a line about an inch or inch and a half wide. That way, I can stay on the line when I am cutting.

For something like a straight cut on a 2X4 I slide a square under the tape, move it to where the mark should be and get a nice line. Takes three hands though. Pencils don't stay behind my ear for some reason so I'm always looking for it. So that would be a cool toy.

So here is a carpentry joke.

A guy goes to a lumber yard and says to the clerk "I need some four by twices."

Clerk: You need what?
Guy: Four by twices.
Clerk: You mean two by fours?
Guy: Yup, that's it.
Clerk: OK how long do you need them?
Guy: Quite a while I'm building a house.
