I tried doing some research on "acceptable and un or less acceptable" descriptors. There are so many conditions and each seems to have it's own preferred descriptors. The one thing that struck me is the notion of "people first". What it comes down to is people have various conditions, not the other way around. So it's preferable to say people with disabilities over disabled people. One of those little distinctions that make a difference. I did not make this up. And when I think about it makes sense to me.

So while I don't have a full blown tag for this I suggest that we put RVers or I-RVers with...

Health Related Challenges and Solutions
or any other terms that put the individual first.

The many stories related here already show that the condition doesn't define - the spirit and determination of the individuals is what shines through.

I'll throw my two cents in. I have multiple disabilities, not multiple handicaps. ADA covers Americans and their disabilities. I think handicapped is just used to describe parking spaces, IMHO.

Hey Wayne - thanks for looking up donations - since I was the one offering to donate I appreciate it. I searched too and got so many unrelated threads I gave up. As for hijacking - it is "general discussion" not "single - specific topic discussion" so I think it's ok to wander a bit provided we return to the topic. But I've been wrong before.

I'm handicapped. Or disabled. Whatever. I really don't care what it is called except when people get carried away trying to come up with "creative" PC names for it and it becomes too obscure to identify (a rose by any other name...), like what is starting to happen here. Whatever name you wind up choosing, please apply the K.I.S.S. principle when choosing it (Keep It Simple, S*****) so people will be more likely to find it. One person suggested using the legal term (disability) used in the ADA. That is the most sensible name suggestion I've seen so far.

I don't like being handicapped but I am and changing the name isn't going to change that. Those who do find words like handicapped or disabled offensive need to face reality.

If you want to get ultra politically correct you could use "RVing with differing abilities".

X2!

My wife is in a wheelchair and she often chuckles and groans at the non-disabled PC crowd attempting to come up with phrases they think are "kind" to people with disabilities.

Why are we fighting about whether you are handicapped? Obviously not everyone is going to be happy but we can try to be all inclusive. Just throw what'd you'd do and the admin can look at the responses and take your opinion into account.

Please don't be too hard on us Politically Correct folks that are not handicapped/disables/less-than-able...

Let me put it this way, folks that are in a group tend to be more comfortable with terms that others might not be. There is nothing wrong with PC folks trying to be PC to some extent. It is meant as a way to show respect.

In the end, I don't really care what the group name is. I tossed out some ideas just for starters. All I care is that the group name is respectful and descriptive enough to draw members into the fold.

OK folks, I've taken a stab at this and you can have a look. The set up is not complete; threads aren't yet associated with this group and the Group name won't display yet in members avatar blocks. Rather than have it display as Disabled RVers, I was thinking we might want to have it display as 'No Limits Club'

I like it just the way it is. It directs new members right to where they can't be confused as to what the group is about.
