They often email questions like: "Is your "Item" still for sale?" Or "Still have it?" without specifics.

This kind of scam is not unusual or new for that matter. These kinds of scams are done all over Craigs List and even to businesses.

I used to get similar ones at the hotel I owned in SE Asia, usually asking for reservations for a large group (as a hook) then wanting banking information for a deposit.

The best way to counteract this is simple.

In your ad specify Cash on delivery. Also specify you will only accept emails...NO TEXTS and then demand a Phone call. this is usually enough to deter these types from even approaching you.

DO NOT accept payment by Bank Wire Transfer. Those can be "recalled" by the sender days later. I know. I had one recalled for more than $100,000.00 at one time. Once the disagreement was settled I had the buyer resend it and I was at the bank when it arrived took the cash out and deposited it in another bank. Thus it is out of reach.

This kind of thing is not new, people used to write bad checks all the time for all kinds of stuff. This is just the latest twist. It's not the world we "live in today" it's the way the world has always been.
