Hello. I'm new to this forum and new to RV'ing

I'm 67, selling my house, and purchasing a 5th wheel toy hauler to live in for the rest of my days.

I'm asking for help for a list of the top three toy haulers. I've budgeted $55,000, so it will probably be used.

Next, I'm going to haul this with a used truck. I'm looking for your thoughts on a dually, make and model. I've budgeted $55,000 for this also.

All answers are greatly appreciated. I'll probably be here many times looking for your professional opinions.

At $55k each, for the truck and 5er, you should be ok.

Remember that maintenance, especially on a diesel truck can be expensive. The dually will always work, a SRW can work too if the fiver is light enough. I assume you are thinking 350/3500 series of trucks.

Find the 5W and see what it weighs then get a truck big enough to tow it. I'm personally a Super duty guy and have had F250 & F350's SRW, all diesel. If you go with a super duty diesel you'll want the 6.7 after 2011 with factory tow package & 5W prep. When you find it all you need to do is install a hitch & hook up. My choice of hitch is the B & W Companion.

Toy Hauler

Thanks for your quick reply.

Regarding maintenance for a diesel, what do you recommend I should budget for maintenance?

Yes, I've been advised to look at Ford, Chevy, and Ram. The high-end models. I want to have plenty of power for pulling the toy hauler.

I plan to tow a Can-Am Spyder in the garage.

Dealer oil change and fuel filter is about $400. Other issues 2k per year. FYI, the higher end models have lower carrying capabilities. Weight goes into all those features and eats away carrying loads.

You don't say how you plan to use this 5th wheel, do you plan to travel the country, or just stay in one place, or something in between?

Definitely have an emergency fund because expensive issues do come up with diesels. My gardener had to pay 16K to fix the heads on his F250.

Welcome and good luck in you search. I am a Class A (DP) kind of guy so can't help on the TT/5er questions.
Enjoy the adventure.

Hi ! Welcome to IRV2! We're sure glad you joined the gang!

You should be able to get a nice rig for that amount.

Good luck, happy trails, and God bless!

Pulling any weight diesels the only way to go. Diesel cost is another relative issue, good maintenance will get you 1/2 million miles or more. I use synthetic oil & change once a year regardless of mileage. In another post I saw $400 and that's about right. IF it breaks it's not what I would consider unreasonable. I had a major break down on my last F350, $5000 to fix. I drive a used F350 but new it listed at almost 75K so another 5K?? or 0K for another used?

I just checked & you can get a crate engine 7K and found a 2017 used 9.5K add maybe 5 for labor.
