As long as you hit Atlanta about 7:30 a.m. on Sunday morning, you should sail right through.....maybe.

I'll second the I 95 to I 26 option. We have traveled that way several times coming out of Florida to avoid Atlanta. I 95 traffic isn't any worse than I 75 and I 26 traffic when we traveled it was pretty light except around Charlotte.
Safe travels!

Went thru downtown Atlanta on I-75 on 4/25 at 1:30pm and again on 5/10 at 12:00pm and sailed right through. No delays at all.

Miss rush hours and Atlanta is usually not too bad. Remember I said "usually".

As long as some homeless bum doesn't burn down the interstate bridge.

The last time I was thru Asheville, there was construction at the I-40/26 intersection and it was a bit of a mess so if you go that way and the construction is still happening, I would try and miss the evening rush hour.

If I were in your situation, I would hit 75 north to Forsyth, Ga (bypass Macon on I-475)
At Forsyth, Ga 83 thru Monticello (say hello to Trisha Yearwood as you pass her home) On to Madison on 83. Catch US441 north toward Athens. You will see the Athens by-pass Ga loop 10) around Athens toward Commerce. From Athens on, most of it is 4 lane divided highway to Franklin NC and over to Cherokee. If you stay on US441 thru the GSMNP it will take you over the mtn to tne Pigeon Forge connector.
If driving thru the park and mtns is a worry to you, then at Sylva get US74 toward Waynesville (4 lane most of the way) to I-40. I-40 west thru the Pigeon River Gorge to NC 66 and then 66 south to Sevierville and Pigeon Forge.
The second option is the longest but there are no switchbacks like you will find coming through the Park.

West side fly by ATL
Exit 75 NB at Tifton then follow GA 520(also listed as US 82 and US 280) through Ft Benning to I-185 at Columbus, GA. The northbound I-185 to exit at the end to the west on I-85 and west 1 exit on I-85 to LaGrange exit 18(about 1 mile). Turn rt on GA 109 to US 27 about 3 miles and turn rt northbound on US 27. Follow US 27 NB to Rome and then bear rt into GA 53 to Calhoun, GA then reconnect with I-75 north.
This is entirely 4 lane and most speed are 65 MPH (higher n I-185). Very few traffic lights. Light traffic. Scenic with nice stops and site seeing alternatives if you want along the way.
Best kept secret for bypassing Atlanta. Please don't tell anyone about this so we don't get any traffic!

Military Police like to write tickets, so watch the speed. Its all up hill/down hill in Benning.
The ramps at the north end of I-185 will be I-85 North, or before that, on the left, I-85 South. He is telling you to go south on I-85 to the first exit, #18, Lafayette Parkway.
Much easier is simply to exit I-185 at exit #42 (you are 7 miles short of the end of it), turn left at the top of the ramp, and you are on US27 north and just follow the US27 signs. Straighter shot, less miles, less wandering, pleasant ride in the country for a few miles before LaGrange.

You can't drive through the state of Georgia without going through Atlanta! It's on the sign as you enter Georgia in fine print. It states" Welcome to Georgia, the Peach state, all roads lead to and through Atlanta, you have been warned".

I like US 441 myself - coming from Jax Fl going to the mountain around Cherokee, NC, I run up to Waycross and over to Pierson. You can get it off I 10 east of 75 to avoid Lake City. Up in Ga, it is almost like a limited access freeway. Limited lights and bypasses around many towns. It is nicer than 441 in Florida. I try not to run interstate highways if I can avoid them. Too many accidents and sudden slow downs on them.
