I have to look at it this way, if you were planning on spending 1000 on fuel this year you will spend 1250
If you are planning to spend 5000, the increase will run you up to 6000. It's a fact of life, and we bought our toad with this in mind. Plan the trips with using the trips with using the toad more. We just bought the MH and made most of our plans around 4 dollar fuel. (diesel) we wouldn't have done it if we thought 5 dollars was not manageable.
If you take a long trip, just boondocks a couple of nights on the road. It's still an enjoyable experience, and you'll safe money.

You'll be glad to know, if you spent $4 a gallon for fuel and it totaled $1,185, the $5 fuel will make the cost $1,481.25. See, I just saved you $818.75. Want to split it with me? (just kidding) hope that makes you feel better.

Plan your trips for later in the year. The gas situation will change.

Roaming out west
We have been planning our trip since July 2011. Hopefully gas will stay below 4.50, if it does maybe we have a little for a trip in the fall. This trip will be taking us from SC to the west coast, and points in between.

My strategy is to drive less and stay longer; the goal being to control (minimize) the average cost per day of a trip. Also to religiously use Gasbuddy to plan my fuel stops along the way.

I don't like it, but if you sit down and look at some numbers it is interesting.
1000 mile trip at 8mpg takes 125 gallons
$3.50 $437
$5.00 $625
That is $188 difference. Seems like if we can't afford that we probably shouldn't be out there.
Now if you are planning a 5000 mile trip the difference jumps to $940.

pretty soon it will be cheaper to drill your own well and process the crude your self in the back yard with a wash tub and camp fire. I think when the DW retires and we start going south for the winters I will take my Honda scooter and put a side car on it and take it with us. I will have to do the side car thing, I know darn well she won't do very well on her own Honda scooter.

Paid $3.55 a gallon today and the price went up 8 cents in 5 hours. We will be traveling less this summer and staying closer to home. The longest trip will probably be 1 hour from home. We will probably see $5 by summer.

If everyone keeps discussing raising prices, everyone is going to be expecting it...which will make it more likely to occur

I just left Seattle Sunday with a fillup at $3.479 (Sam's Club), Stopped and filled at Brooks, OR (Pilot/Flying J) at $3.579, Next I stopped at Weed, CA and every station was at $3.999 ($3.979 with Discount at Pilot/Flying J) I am now in Citrus Heights, CA and the lowest I have seen is $3.859 every other station I have see is $3.959 and one Chevron at $4.059. In fact I saw all three of these prices at one intersection and all three had cars buying gas..
I am headed to Yuma, AZ, then Carlsbad, NM, then Marathon FL, then East Machias, ME before heading back to Seattle, gas prices will be what they are and I am going to enjoy my trip even if it takes two years to pay the gas bill...

Yes you are right, the gas situation will change, for the worse though because we have a fall trip planned.
I told my wife two months ago when we planned out the trip that gas would probably be $5.00 a gallon.
We're at $4 now where I live but at $5.00 it might be a deal breaker.

Hi Guys
Canadians pay close to $5 per gallon or more right now. So your gas prices are a steal.

I've been saying that for years. The news media keeps prepping us to expect higher prices and we accept it.

Rules won't let me say why, but prices will come down this fall.
