Hi folks, we restored a historic farm in upstate New York, home and barns and all the rest. Now we are finally ready to have fun. We are putting in two camp sites for friends and family. We have an unused septic system and tank which is connected to the barn, which now we are cleaning out, modifying with an above ground tank pipe. Our campers will be up on the top of our fields and we will use a honey wagon to empty tanks, then deposit in ground septic tank.We have looked on line at honey wagons, however we would like to DIY pump and tank and trailer which we can use. Does anyone have this type of project and wagon that you use on your home campsite. Welcome any suggestions on pumps, portable holding tanks and the like. Thanks.

Look around in the work camping forums. Somewhere I saw a picture of a trailer used by the oil drillers to provide water and sewage disposal for campers parked at the gates of drilling sites in the boonies in Texas.

You should get some good ideas if you can find those pictures.

Our campground has a 300 gallon tank, and a gas engine pump on a small wagon. We have external holding tanks at our sites. They come around when we let them know our external tanks are full.

The campground has 24 sites spread out over 30 or so acres in a wooded area.

Any 75-100 gallon tank on a trailer plus a macerator pump will do the trick. It's probably not something you use every day, so a battery to operate a 12v pump is all you need, plus a tank on wheels.

My honey wagon is can hold 35 gallons,my black water tank is 25 gallons,wagon has 4 wheels on it and can be pulled by truck or arc,if ur not hauling s long distance then this would be all u would need,think the cost was under 300 dollars

Make sure that the town fathers are ok with what you are doing, and permits granted and work, especially any electrical, done to code.

OK, 'nuff of that. The CG where we spend most of the summer has a good sized macerator pump and tank to ensure that the, ummm, stuff is ground to a size that will be digested in the septic tank and that solids wont flow into the leech field. For what you need, a small pump, gas or electric, and a container big enough to hold an RV's full black tank - and they are getting pretty big these days, our 5er is at 50 gallons. As far as gray water, a little spillage - no big deal but they too are up there with ours, again, at 95 gallons with many others being bigger.

You didn't say how far the run is from the RV parking to the septic dump. Would it be feasible to run PVC to the septic tank and use a potable macerator pump for the RV's? I put one together to dump at my S&B for about $150.

My macerator pumps out the tank easily, and it's about 75' at a slight uphill slant to the sewer cleanout at our dtrs. place.

If the building code permits it, you can have a below-ground holding tank with a macerator/lift pump to transfer waste into the septic system. That would eliminate the need for an RV-mounted macerator/pump. Sewage lift pumps are common in many parts if the country, and are much more durable than the RV-specific pumps. We have one in the basement of our current home to move waste from a below-grade bathroom and kitchen to our septic system, about seven feet vertically. When I lived in Arizona, we had a sewage lift pump that served an entire neighborhood of about 25 houses, pumping waste uphill into the municipal sewer system.
