Homemade propane firepit???

Has anyone out there made one of the propane firepits like they sell at Cabela's, etc? Typically we enjoy sitting around a wood campfire but think one of those propane pits would be nice on nights we don't want to mess with a real fire. I have a few fish/turkey cookers and was wondering how simple it would be to modify one of them into somthing like the ones they sell for a couple hundred bucks. Any info and or pics would be appreciated.

Haven't built one but you have me thinking about it. Would keep the smoke and ashes out of the MH and I have a 10' hose for my grill that I could use. Will watch this thread to see what you come up with.

A campground friend of ours has made a sandbox burner and bought some cheap ceramic logs and uses this all the time. The sand is for dispersing the propane and making the flames jump around. He has some sort of material laying on the sand between the logs that glows red hot and this simulates the embers.

The whole thing would probably give a gas inspector a stroke but he hasn't had any problems with it that I know of. Next time I see him I'll get some pictures.

Thanks Possum. I hadn't even thought about the sand idea. Most likely the "ember like" material your referring to is the same stuff they use for ventless gas logs. I put one in our house a few years ago and included was a small pack of wool like material that you take small pinches of and lay around the burners. When the flame hits them they appear to be burning. Gives a real cool effect.

Excuse the spelling, but I think it's Vermiculite. Wife says Lowes has it in the garden section, she's a plant specialist and I don't question her in that area. We have a gas fireplace we carry because she said we wanted one! LOL

Correct! Vermiculite is used in a lot of gas logs and simulates glowing embers. It look a little like steel wool.
