Homemade Surge Protector
I have been researching for weeks and have decided to make a surge protector. I've ordered a 18" 50 amp cable with removable backs at each plug end and I've found out which MOV's I need and found the plans to make it.
I'll post more once it's done.

I'm interested in building a 50A surge protector also, can you post more info on material list, parts info, links and pics of how you did yours?

I decided to just purchase a progressive 50 amp unit. The cord I bought looked like the backs were removable so I could put the MOV's inside it, but the back was not removable.

Will your design just protect against surges or all electrical faults like the PI EMS?
Surges are rare and a surge protector is of little value. It's the other faults that are much more common that an EMS protects from.

Wasn't a design that I came up with. Found it on the internet. I believe it was only protection against surge. Uses 4 MOV's. Very basic protection.

that works great on 400+ volt surges. the MOVs short out and explode inside the cord, popping the pedestal breaker. 2 issues: they are one-shot-and-done. while they have protected your stuff, how do you know if you are now un-protected? you need a circuit that will tell you that. also, if you come back to the rv and find the breaker tripped, was it due to a surge (thank you MOVs!) or just an overload?
not saying that it is a bad idea. i used to have several MOVs just plugged into outlets about 25 years ago, back when a surge-protected power strip was 50 bux. some idiot hit a power pole and sent 19,000 volts through several houses. everybody around us lost all sorts of electronics. we lost 4 MOVs, 12 fuses, a dimmer, and a 40-watt chandelier bulb. never did find any of the glass... just the base. btw, its amazing how bright a 40-watt bulb gets with 19,000 volts across it! we thought WW3 had started! and of course the big BOOM from the transformer helped. no damage to either stereo system, or the two computers that were plugged in. all the MOVs left scorch marks on the walls. pretty easy to tell they were shot.
