Hot water on or off
Just courious, when camping do people just leave their hot water heater on all the time or turn it off at night? I normally turn it off at night so it won't turn on and off all night long. When I get up in the morning, I turn it back on because it don't take that long to heat up water.

If tank heater we would leave it off most of the time. Turning it on ahead of shower or meal time needs. Now with tankless, we mostly leave it on.

We only turn the propane water heater OFF while driving and when the coach is not being used.
But what you do is not uncommon...(and perfectly fine).

What is the rationale of turning it off? - other than saving a few cents on electric? If on LP I can see turning it off. Personally, I like washing my hands in hot/warm water and soap, especially when working around the basement and wet bay.
Ours stays on from the time we arrive until we leave or even if we are on the road and running the genset for A/C on hot days

I usually leave the electric on and the gas off. I also always shut off the breaker before connecting the plug and again before plugging in so any arcing is in the breaker. That keeps the water hot when on shore power thus keeping the space under the sink warm in cold weather. When boon docking I leave the gas on all night for the same reason.
When hot enough to want the A/C we shut off the HW unless needed. The tank will stay warm for more than 8 hours as far as hand washing goes. For other things we turn in on a few minutes before the event.

Well, different strokes I guess.
Personally, I leave the propane off when we are on shore power and only turn the propane on if we require faster recovery time. But since replacing the 10 gal with a 12, we seldom run short of hot water.

I leave the electric side on all the time when stopped. I'll turn on the LP if taking showers or high water usage. Nothing on when on the road.

What do you do at home? And why do it different in the RV?
If I'm using LP gas mode for the heater (rare!), I might turn it off overnight to reduce noise. Otherwise, probably not.

Ours only operates on LP so it gets turned on 1/2 hr. before showers in the a.m. and then is turned off. I say frugal, DW says I'm cheap.

The only time we use propane to heat the water is when we have no electric or when we want a fast recovery so we can take a couple showers one after another. Ours is only a 6 gallon tank but it is adequate for the 2 of us. If on electric, it stays on all the time.

Is your tankless propane or electric and if propane have you noticed it using a lot of propane?
On my RV we use electric but will shut it off overnight and if we are on 30 amp and running air conditioning we'll shut it off until needed.
I avoid using propane for heating water unless necessary as it is noisy and I like to conserve my propane for the refrigerator while in motion.

After 10 years fulltime we run on electric unless drycamping. It stays on all the time. I turn it off just before Ron disconnects power. If drycamping we turn it off at night out a courtesy to our neighbors so they don't hear it

Now I am wondering, I THINK we are only LP? Asked someone that also had a Bounder and he said he had a switch that would switch between LP and electric and I don't have that switch, just one switch to turn it on to heat but will call Fleetwood tomorrow.
