How about wet wipes in the black tank?

We actually make our own. We use Kleenex Hand Towels paper towels, soak them in witch hazel, and put them in a plastic Huggie's wet wipe container.

They are not "septic safe", but will they hurt our black tank?

Or is the issue that they will eventually clog up the dump station?

If it doesn't break down in water, it doesn't go into the tank. Kleenex doesn't easily break down, I wouldn't put it in the black tank for fear of creating a clog at the outlet.

Good question to ask but...
Black tanks are holding tanks and not septic tanks and therefore the materials do not have to "breakdown" while "on hold". That said, I would not put anything in the black tank that may harm septic systems because many dump stations are actually large scale septic systems which can be easily harmed by introducing strong chemicals which kill the necassary anaerobic bacteria, or by dumping items that cannot readily be decomposed such as paper towel materials, tampons, etc. Also, public sewer systems should not have to handle paper towels that will often be lodged somewhere in the piping system causing blockages as well as treatment plant issues.

Regular household toilet paper is just fine for black tanks but paper towels should always be trashed and not flushed. That goes for RV's or households, septic or public sewer.

cheers,
Joopy

Paper material that does not readily break down has a higher risk of hanging up on internally protruding tank sensors and being more difficult to remove.

If you can soak them in witch hazel and can still use them they are probably not going to break down quickly enough to be used in the black tank.

Several folks on other rv forums have had black tank and/or toilet line plugging up. When questioned and blockage removed it has been from using 'wipes' vs toilet paper.

The wipes do not break down, they clump up and can hang up on slightest burr. They can create havoc on septic systems and waste water treatment plants.

IF you use them.....dispose of them in trash bag

OK, cool!

The main reason I come here is for the quick and knowledgeable feedback

The reason I asked was because I just read on here that "septic safe" TP is OK. And we have been using that crappy (pun intended) RV paper, thinking that we had to.

Newbs...

Just remember - it is a "holding" tank - not a "septic" tank. I don't leave "stuff" in there long enough to actually decompose... My tank is thoroughly flushed at least every 6 - 8 days, and I never leave RV stored with "stuff" in the either tank.

Our local sewer district says NO wipes!! Even if they say "Safe for septic systems". They do not dissolve and then clog up the filters which have to be cleaned by hand.

Is there any TP that isn't safe for septic systems? I don't pay much attention to which TP I buy at home. Just had my tank pumped after at least 10 years, guy said it was in amazing shape.
