I read a news story that many RVs were being searched these days coming east out of Colorado due to the legal marijuana there

Cute video! And yes...all the same worries we have.

BTW...that half-empty bottle of wine in the fridge...is that considered "open container" while we are on the road?

We are in a trailer, would that make a difference? I am sure in a class A/C it would be "open container".

Yes. Obviously. I would fully expect an inspection if we pass through CO. But I think we will end up further north, from Yellowstone on our way to Seattle.

Of course, marijuana is legal in WA also, so I would expect an inspection on the way into Oregon...

I would expect to be inspected, in and out, if crossing any boarder these days with what is going on in the world we now know. Our freedom to travel as we once knew, is gone forever as Americans........welcome to the new world!
And if you are not checked, they are not doing their jobs to protect their country!
They have a job/duty to inspect/search you when crossing boarders into the USA, to protect me! in this new world we now live in.

Have traveled across Canada-US border many times. To the gentleman who would never go back to Canada, let me say if Canadians felt that way about the way we sometimes get treated going to the US your Southern States would be hurting. I get hassled more by your border guards, mostly about food, plants, than ours. But seeing the way foreign entrees have brought destruction to our flora and fauna from other foreign lands, I can appreciate what they are doing. So come on to Canada it is beautiful and friendly and you are far less chance of being shot or blown up

No more than my 20 oz of Irish Whiskey I had in my 40 oz bottle would be. The bottle was in the closet along with soda bottles. I was asked how I knew it was 20 oz and I told them I poured it into a measuring cup to see how much I had (and I actually did). They thanked me and waved me on.

My wife has family in Canada so we used to go there frequently. The last few years we have been to subject of serious searches when returning through Detroit. Going into Canada is usually just answer their questions and go, but coming home?? For someone as used to international travel as I am this is kind of disgusting. [ moderator edit ]

Would never expect a search- I have stopped at several border state inspections and answered questions but no physical inspections. I would think a warrant may be necessary to ransack the inside.

4 border crossings in western Canada/US last year- no boardings by officials

6 border crossings in Eastern Canada/US this year 2 boardings by officials. One by Ag man in US after getting off the ferry fromYarmouth
The other when getting on a different ferry in Canada , by Canadian officer.

I have found in most cases, going into Canada was polite and professional.
Coming back into the states they seem like wanna be mall cops.
Looking over the visor and not opening a storage compartment.
Makes no sense other than they like the hassle.

Some reading: Border Searches | ezbordercrossing.com

The Inspection Experience | ezbordercrossing.com

Quote from above link: Recreational vehicles can use car or RV lanes but should not use truck lanes. You should also be prepared that the officer may want to come on-board to look around your vehicle.

You should always expect a search. The US Customs agents are the ONLY law enforcement organization that has the authority to search you and/or you vehicle without a warrant. They even have the authority to do a body cavity search just because the feel you may be hiding something. I have a sister that has retired for US Customs as an inspector.
