How to get under that 'luminum cladding atop my A&E awning

I have a leak in my awning. Well, it's really a crack that starts right up against the rain gutter and runs under the metal shield that protects the awning. It goes about six inches down the canvas. I've obtained patching materials: scotch gard, a rectangle of canvas, fabric glue, etc. I've waterproofed the canvas rectangle and thought I would patch from the top. But I don't know how to get under that metal shield. If it's a big job, I'll try patching from the underside. Any advice?
