How to rid the ammonia in an older refer?

Just purchased an older trailer for hunting and fishing trips. Non-operating gas refer smells of ammonia when opening the door. How do I eliminate the ammonia best?

Pull out the entire cooling unit and scrap it. Then close up any holes.

If you smell ammonia, the cooling unit has a leak and will have to be replaced. If you will have an electrical hookup where you plan to take the trailer to hunt and fish, you may want to consider replacing the entire RV refrigerator with a residential refrigerator.

Ammonia powered RV refrigerators have a lifespan of about 10 years--until corrosion in the coils give way. Manufacturers don't engineer a way for the sweating copper pipes to drain water well.

The good news is that your $1200 (new) fridge can be rebuilt for minimal charges. There's a large RV frefrigerator repair shop in Hartselle, AL

I had mine fixed once, and when it went out after another 10 years I used it for a closet and put in a 4 1/2 cubic foot dorm fridge.

Yup, you have only two options. Replace the cooling unit or replace the fridge!

If you decide to replace the cooling unit, I would recommend David Force at RV Cooling Unit Warehouse in Memphis, TN.

Good luck, happy trails, and God bless!
