Hughes Autoformers PWD50 vs Progressive Industries HW50C

We have a new coach on order and am wanting to install a hardwired Surge Protection/EMS system when I take delivery of it. In the past, I have always used Progressive Industries for my electrical protection. Recently I noticed another option from Hughes Autoformers. It has a lot of positives about it and I like the fact I can connect via Bluetooth to see the status.

My question is, does anyone currently use the Hughes Autoformers hardwired version? I would like to hear your experience with it, likes and dislikes.

Is that a complete AC protection system like the HW50C or is just an autoformer?

I think OP is talking about the Hughes Autoformer with Surge Protection vs this Progressive EMS system.

Yep, you're probably correct.

I has just saw the new one I posted in a Motorhome magazine and I guess it stuck with me.

I have the new Hughes surge protector with EPO and Bluetooth - the plug in version, not the hardwired version. As far as I can tell, they are the same except for the way they are hooked up.

That being said, I like the Hughes. It has not had to protect from a surge yet, but recently in a park with faltering power, it shut down on low voltage. I recommend the unit. I don't know that it is better than a PI, but I do know it works.

This is the Hughes Autoformer surge I am interested in. The referenced Progressive Industries surge link is correct. The Hughes unit does only have a three year warranty however it has replacement modules if one goes bad or for a damaging surge. Being able to monitor the power usage and get notified via a text if there are power issues is a definite plus for me.

I have the PI . The quick restart as well as the mobile notification is a great update! I’ll have to consider this next time.

I've been using Progressive 50XL 30AMP. It's a comfort to plug this in first to the campsite power thus verifying power is good. Though many campgrounds do have good power, having this unit relieves our concerns about poor power, storms, and excess surges from Class A-ers all putting their A/C on at once, thus dimming the lights.

But the previous RV I've had used the Hughes autoformers hardwire version. It's a great product, save our camper numerous times already! Easy to install, and awesome monitoring features.

I am going to go with the Hughes PWD50-EPO over the PI EMS-PT50X for these two main reasons: 1) It's modular - The internal surge protector component that self sacrifices can be replaced for around $57. The PI one will have to be replaced if there is a high enough power surge. 2) Hughes has the capability to monitor volts, amps, and kwh through an app & send email and text notifications if anything is wrong. But this only works if you are in the general area of the device. However, Hughes has partnered with a company called RV Whisper and you can now be anywhere in the world and get same notifications over wifi/the cloud.

FYI the hardwired PI has a sacrificial module. The portable does not.

That is correct. The portable PI one does not. That’s why I am going with the Hughes portable one. It has a replaceable Surge / Spike Module.
