I 95 North...
I"m heading north to N. H. in a few weeks from Melbourne, Fl. and would like to avoid the lousy roads and high cost of tolls north of D.C....I'm looking for the best route north to avoid those costly tolls and lousy roads...34 ft., Fleetwood Flair V-10 pulling a toad...

If you really want to avoid congestion, go I 95 to Richmond, VA. West on I 84 to I 81, then north to Scranton, PA, I 84 to Hartford, CT, I 91 north. You'll avoid Washington, Baltimore, Wilmington, Philadelphia and New York City.

X2, but I don't know the current condition of those roads.

I use rt 17 north at Fredericksburg va. To I-66 to I-81 north nice ride .

The sarcastic answer is north of Richmond there are no good ways...Unfortunatly it is closer to reality than any of us wish. Old Friend who went from NH to Naples went I 95-I495-I290-I90-I84-I81 then cut back to I95 Via I77. I have tried every route out of NH, including going through VT, upstate NY, and NYC, as I lived there for 30 years and traveled via car and MH all over US and east coast and though 81 is now used by a lot of trucks and 84 and 495 are miserable I still take them as there are no other valid options..jmho

Unfortunately this is not a yes or no answer. The route and traffic conditions vary greatly depending on the day of the week and the time day.
I have been most every way myself and as I said above, it depends.....
OBTW, we recently tried the Delawar Water Gap route Rt #209. Check with local sources BEFORE you go that way. There were several detours and bridge closures in effect at that time.

Truer words have never been spoken. Anything north of Fredericksburg is an absolute nightmare unless you're rolling through between 2300 and 0400 hrs.

As the European tourist explained it,There is the Mason Dixon line and all the roads north of it are built by Mason and south of it by Dixon .But they have this frenchman named De tour whose roads are terrible.

I live on 66 between 17 and 81. This is the best route. Also went to school at FIT so I can speek from a lot of experience traveling from Melbourne.

then stay away from 81north around wilkes-barre scranton. for as long as i can remember 81 has always been under construction there and the roads are terrible

Take I-95 North to I-26 Northwest in SouthCarolina, to I-77 North to I-81 in Virginia from there its your choice pick up an interstate north to NY Sate then accross Mass or Vermont to New Hampshire. This is great route it avoids the Balitimore Washington mess and is very scenic the roads are all good I take it in the spring coming back from Florida to New Jersey its a litte longer but a much nicer drive. The only toll I encounter coming back is on the Pa Turnpike but you can avoid that if you pickup an interstate north from 81 to New England
