I’m Mad as Hell, and I’m not taking it Any Longer

I just pulled into the KOA in New Bern, NC. The charge for a basic site with 50 amp service is $60.00 per day. That isn’t acceptable to me. We planned to stay for two days, but the fees made us elect a single day only because we were here and stuck.

We checked another KOA in Wilmington, NC for the next night. That fee is $65.00 per night.

Enough is enough! I’ll not pay those fees. These rates are destroying the RV experience. Walmart is the only option, and how long will that last?

I’ve been RVing since the 1950’s. Now it is ending – quite a pity!

Don't stay at KOA's! They are too expensive, not kept up enough to be worth what they charge. If traveling, I will stop for some sleep either at WalMart, Sam's, etc. If I find a small park that the cost is not prohibitive and is quiet, will stay there.

Even State parks are getting up there, we paid $30 for a site last year with 30/50 amp in Colorado. Prices are going up everywhere.
But KOAs are over the top. Too much $$ for a parking lot experience.
No thanks, not my style.

I agree....The highest I ever paid was $70 for a Myrtle Beach ocean front campground. Our Ohio state parks are running $22 to $30 a night. In Ohio they have a "rewards program" (open to anyone) where depending on the dollar amount spent at campsites, lodge, camp store, cabins and gifts you get points...7000 points = one night free. So far this year I earned 4 free nights. And I'll use them at Mohican State Park because they are a $30 a night park. Also the Ohio "Golden Buckeye" card (60 and over) gets ya 50% off campsites during the week and 10% on the weekends.

right....Our little condo's on wheels...

That is why we stay at state parks 95% of the time...trees, rivers, lakes, fresh air.....

My own "mini bar" is only a step away..

And if a choose...I can bring my own bed bugs...

I have stayed in a couple of KOA parks that were fairly nice, but most were not. I am resigned to the costs continuing to rise on everything including fuel and RV parks. When the government prints money like there's no tomorrow and spends it like drunken sailors (I hope I am not maligning any drunken sailors here), the price of everything will continue to go up. Things aren't worth any more, the money is just worth less..... That's my $0.02USD, I'll get ...angry.. if I think about it!

If you want to spend a night or a week I would suggest that you look up in the phone book and fine an Elk's Lodge in your area and see about joining it.
They have books that show where all the Lodge's are located in this Country and then some and most have places for R.V. to park.
I have been traveling and using them when I could not fine something else for over 20 years.
Most Lodges have R.V.clubs and the cost is usely have of what privet one charge.
You have to be a member in order to stay at the various Lodges.
Just a thought.

Neither are those RV'ers that stay there since Wal*Marts official policy is to welcome them. Some areas don't allow it but that's not Wal*Marts doing.

I like KOA and many others, but I am selective. I read reviews. This works for me.

I use resources on the internet to make a decision, and have not been disapointed. It's out there to be utilized!

Sometimes, the venue, the concert, the festival, and such will dictate the going rates. Gonna go there? Well, there it is!

These places are getting so-called "high" rates because they can. I find alternatives.

If you find an alternative, how much fuel is it off your chosen course?

Do some research. Dont like it? Dont go there!

Boondocking is a cheap option, I hear.

Just sayin.....

Looked for rates for an overnight motel stay in Fort Stockton, TX, the armpit of Texas, and the cheapest was $79 for a night.

Looked in the the Davis-Monthan Air Force Base Inn, and it is $52 a night.

Fixed income sucks.

One reason that KOA is so expensive is that the campground owner has to pay a percentage of each reservation to KOA. I believe it's somewhere between 10-15% They also have to pay KOA a yearly franchise fee in order to keep their name over the campground. It is expensive. And you don't have to stay there. But the campground owner has to eat as well.

Did you not know the rate before you pulled in ? These rates are published in a variety of places.
