My point is I now know what it is like to be immobile and not have choices to RV or walk (our annual RV trip is cancelled), except with crutches. If you, being an older person, or anybody else have the gift of mobility and good mental/physical health, get out there and RV, walk, swim, do all the things that we have taken for granted during our lives. Because not being able to do it is frankly depressing....and there is nothing worse than living with regret.
I'll get most of my mobility again, but this has been a good life lesson for me. I'm learning humility (asking for help), patience, acceptance and forgiveness.

I wish you the best of luck for a speedy recovery!!

Don't forget to remind him that if he doesn't spend it, his son-in-laws most certainly will enjoy spending it for him one day!

I'm 68 and about 4 years ago I got the RVing bug. Had a tiny old class C, didn't like it, then a 2006 Winnebago, couple of slides, the wind blew me all over. Now have an old 92 Eagle, that hubby is always fixing something on, but I like it.
So I take my DD who is mentally challenged and a couple times a year we run around the country. My husband is working till the end of next year, but he travels the world and does not want to travel when he gets home, understandable, but doesn't care if I go. So we do!
I just bought me a 16 ft Lowes Skorpion fishing boat too and will go fishing as I get time.
Life is to short, we waited most of our lives saving and not doing what I wanted but I am. I figure I can likely drive it 5 more years. If I find my reaction time and judgement are not quite right I will quit driving it, but so far so good. Hope you are still reading this thread.

ive traveled over 500,000 mile in the last 15 years. we have worn out a 96 itasca, 2002 39 foot chieftain ,and now have a 2006 itasca meridian with 98, 000 miles on it. i also have worn out three trucks, and now have a 2500 4ws dodge ram. w
weve also been thru storms tornadoes in oklahoma and kansas. scary, but we watched the warnings, and drove out of the area. weather radios are wonderful. never had a major problem. its not a problem if you throw enough money at it.
the only state we havent been to is alaska. we plan to do that next year.
there has been only three incidents that i have felt threatened. all have been in rest stops. i carry a chinese sks doorlock. just the sight of this discourages the person banging on my door.
the secret to facing off is to look first, and verify there is a real danger. you have to be very careful who sees a weapon. show it as a last resort, but be prepared for about 7000 dollars in legal fee., if you are wrong.
with that said, thee is so much to do and see in this country, its hard to believe that some go to another country for vacation. to each his own.
we see 5 to 10 national parks a year, and still have more to visit. there are many back roads that have surprised us with so much beauty and the tight turnarounds.
go ahead and do it. you will always regret it if you dont. the kids can just get over it.
we have always wanted to go on the raft in the grand canyon. we put it off.
we live 85 miles away. now our health wont allow us to do that. just one small thing, but its one of many. dont let life pass you by. if you can afford it, do it.
