There usually a wire arm that swings down to tell when the ice bucket is full. Left that arm up to shut ice maker off. Some have a normal a switch instead.

I think we are talking about different problems. Mine was ice cold but with no water on. So it runs it cycle including heating up to eject the ice. But, with no ice it can overheat and burn itself out. Now mine is residential so maybe that is different.

Yep, different pages. You are right, it will burn out the heater rather quickly. The ice maker link I posted describes a test procedure-with a warning to not leave the test jumper attached for more than x seconds or it will burn out the heater.
BTW, the RV ice maker is from a residential frig, rebranded by Norcold($127).I bought a new one from Amazon branded Whirlpool($54). They also have a generic(Supco) for $45.
