I haven't read through all the posts so if this is a repost I'm sorry. Have you looked at a Taser C2? Best Self Defense Products: TASER® C2

I looked at one of these for my wife before she decided to get her CC permit also. It's pretty pricey but you can purchase replacement ends if you ever fire it and can remove the end and use it as a stun gun type if you need to. Has a LED light and laser sight option.

I'd consider keeping a can of "day glow" aerosol paint handy. If you have to use it it would sure would make it easier to identity the bad guy after he runs away.
