Fox news is quoting a former Shell exec as saying that gasoline will be $5.00 a gallon within two years and that there will be rationing by the end of the decade.

Could anyone afford $5.00 a gallon gas?

And as far as rationing, would anyone even consider traveling much less take the risk of starting out and getting stranded??

If you think that you will stop RV'ing if gas hits $5 a gallon, you better unload your RV now because no one will be buying used RVs at that time.

The greatest thing about the RV lifestyle is that you control where you go and what you enjoy. I can have a great time driving 2 hours to a campground in PA or a great time driving cross country to Yosemite. Heck, I can go out to my driveway, hang out in the motorhome and feel like I'm on vacation!

Maybe there's a reason he's a 'former Shell exec'...

I agree with RVThere. It would certainly change the way I travel and we'd stay in one spot for longer periods but we wouldn't quit.... which is probably a good thing since nobody would by a 40'DP then either.

I love to hear these predictions, just so we all can have a good laugh. However, they are counting on us not remembering their predictions. So, we're not laughing at some of the dumb stuff the so called experts have predicted and has gone the opposite way.

I'll worry about $5 a gal fuel when it gets here. On second thought, I won't even worry then. We too enjoy "stay camping" or just a few mile away.

2 years ago, regular gas was over $4 per gallon one summer. We didn't travel as far & we stayed longer at campgrounds, but it didn't stop us. I figure either the RV is gonna cost me money (repairs/upgrades) or the gas to drive it is.

So to answer the questions, as long as I have the finances to fund this, I'm going to keep at it.

If you are concerned about fuel coast of $5.00 per gallon when it gets here, if ever, you will adapt.
Our last big trip out west was during the last high priced gas period and I would do it again.
The best way to reduce your daily operating cost is to stay in one place longer and see more of the area you are visiting.

Well there is not much doubt it will be $5.00 a gallon some day. But like demochs said, Ill worry about it when it gets here.I don't know about you but forty years ago when it was 50 cents a gallon I had more trouble buying a tank of gas than I do now at 3 dollars a gallon and when it hit 5 I will find a way to fill up the RV and go somewhere. Maybe it won't be a cross country trip but I will go somewhere even if its just out to the lake and sit there for the weekend. My RV sits in the driveway of my repair shop and lots of time I will sit in it after work and have a beer so if you like your RV you will find a way to use it I know I will.

Just a few minutes ago my wife suggested maybe we hold off our Smoky Mtn. trip...stay in Ohio & PA. That happened to us 2 summers ago at about this time of our camping season planning. Then too we stayed closer....

I was in the process of trying to reserve a sites in the Smoky's, but was having trouble getting a good site. Online sites are being reserved within seconds of becoming available. And just about every site I have tried to reserve has been reserved for the max (2 weeks)??? I think people are running programs like the ones on EBay that out bid everyone else....

Newspaper articles the past few weeks suggested $4.25 - $4.75 by early summer. With a hint of a better worldwide economy, oil companies are set to screw the common family yet again. Same story different year. So did the world change that much in 5 years that big oil has ranged from $30 to $150 a barrel ???

For years oil ranged from $16 to $25. Even a $2 or $3 jump in oil was big news. Now...it's all about commodities run away train on oil.

How much of a factor is China's demand and usage increase causing us to pay so much more here???? I am starting to pay more attn to what I buy, made in China??? assembled in China?? product of China???? No more if I can help it.

I remember the folks that would drive down to FL from Canada complaining about the price of gas. Many of them would tell me that if gas hit $1 a gallon, they would have to stop driving down to FL... many of them predicted that most of the Canadians would stop coming to FL.

Can anyone tell me if the Canadians stopped traveling to FL in the winter?

I have "Looked at the math" in the past. Using the average RV usage of 5,000 miles a yr, the difference between $4.00 and $5.00 a gal is around $700.00. I don't want to sound snooty, but if that breakes the bank, you probably should sell your unit.
