Indiana excise tax on MH

Well, I just got my MH license plate renewal letter. In Indiana the personal property tax was ended on boats,MH, campers, planes etc. and replaced by a system that put an excise tax on these items attached to your license renewal.

I paid a 7% sales tax on my new MH in 2010 ($9,000 +) and paid $2,375 in excise tax on the MH. Sales tax due at the dealership as part of the closing deal. The excise tax is due when to go to the BMV.

This year my excise tax is still $2,375 because my MH is a 2011 model built in 2010. So I get to pay the top (step 1) level twice. The tax is based on the MANUFACTURER'S SUGGESTED RETAIL PRICE (not what you paid for it after negotiating with the local dealer. Each year the tax goes down with the increasing age of the MH. Next year I have to pay $2,060 to the state of Indiana.

I hate to be labeled a "whiner" but geeeeeezzzzz this is a simple money grab on the part of the state. Those of you complaining about your $400 - $500 license plates (and in many states far less), count your lucky stars and be glad you're not in Indiana.

Being the home of campers, travel trailers, and motor home production in the nation, the manufacturers (having laid off thousands of workers) can't understand this excise tax any more than I can.

If people stop buying motorhomes in Indiana will they get rid of that tax? In the late 80's early 90's they had a luxury tax on big boats here in Wisconsin. Carver Boats ended up going out of business because people did not want to pay a luxury tax on big boats.
When will government wake up and realize we as a nation are taxed enough?

Here in SC the sales tax on ANY vehicle is capped at $300. You buy a $6,000 clunker you pay $300. You buy a $300,000 DP you pay $300. But you also pay an annual personal property tax on them. Fortunately MH's qualify as a second home so you can get a break.

Only a couple hundred bucks in Texas for tags on my MH each year, and we have no excise tax, property tax, income tax....

You and your neighbors voted for the people that made these laws, so I guess you got what you voted for

Lot's of great information here folks but let's not slip down that "political content" slope.

Thanks

Wow! I didn't know it was like that next door. I guess I'll stay on this side of the IN/OH border.

We paid 9.75% tax on our coach when we bought it and just over $1000 per year for license in WA state. Doesn't it feel good to be a rich fat cat that should pay more?

We in Wa. had tax like that until a few yrs ago. A guy named Iman got a peoples vote through for a $30 basic licence fee. No Excise tax. They have managed to add some fees on but still around $50 for most cars & MHs as far as I know. Trucks have a tonnage fee so my Dually is $80/90.

So, paid $130000-$140000 for the RV, but cant pay a declining tax? If it was still a 'property tax' you would be paying more in the long run. Also, dont forget, most people got a property tax reduction the last couple years, so it equals out.. thanks for helping out

I paid $265 the first time.. $75 the next...

I'm not trying to turn this into a political thread. That is not my intention.

You must live outside the RTA taxing district. Tack on $823 RTA tax, gross veh wgt, and Other, and see what your registration costs. The RTA is the mass transit act that they promised the three counties would get light rail with and as soon as Seattle/King county got theirs, they don't have enough money for anybody else, but you keep paying the tax.

In WA you do still pay excise tax if you bring the vehicle in from out of state, or sales tax if you buy in state, either way it's the same rate depending on where you live.
