Insurance

We are looking to save on our rv insurance. Does anyone have insurance with Good Sam?

If you do how is the coverage? Did you save money? Thank you for the feed back.

I recently quoted from Geico, Progressive (through USAA), Progressive on its own, and National through Good Sam. Went with Progressive through USAA ($1470, one year, 2020 Tiffin Allegro Red). National General through Good Sam was in the $3500 range.

There is no magic answer or one carrier who is always cheaper. You need to determine what coverages you want (type, amounts and deductibles) and then get quotes from several insurers to see who has good rates for your specific situation. There are far too many variables to try to compare to someone else, even if they seem to be similar to you.

Last I knew, Good Sam was an agent for National General but selling a policy with terms tailored by GS. You can also get a quote direct from National General and it may be a bit different due to slightly different terms and conditions.

A good RV-specialist agency like Miller's RV Insurance can do some of the leg work and help get quotes, but you still have to have some concept of what coverages you need and are willing to pay for. Major variables are how much liability (max amounts), collision and comprehensive deductibles, loss coverage based on market value or purchase price, and amount of coverage for personal effects.

No one is going to pay the same amount that another pays. You just have to start calling around and give them all the same specifics as to what insurance coverage you want. That's how you compare.

Everyone is different.... age, where they live, driving record, what kind and size RV/vehicle, etc.

You really need to shop it around for yourself, some people get great deals from one company, some from another, depending on where you live and your individual circumstance. For me I shopped around after the first year of ownership of my coach, and received quotes ranging from twice what I was paying, down to about 2/3 of what I had been paying. For me the best deal came from Allstate

Don't mean to take this thread in an entirely different direction but feel that my recent experience is important to share. I had always been a price shopper when it came to insurance. Somewhere deep in my less than conscious mind dwelt a misguided thought that insurance was a necessary cost of living but the likelihood of really using it in a big way was so slim as to be disregarded.

Wham!!! Our 40DP was slammed into by an 18 wheeler. We walked out of the coach but for 20 minutes I was in a serious state of emotional shock. How could this have happened?

Good news is no one was injured. Bad news was two months of juggling with repair shops and hassle.

Bottom line: my insurance company (Safeco) attentively held my hand every step of the way and ultimately rendered a very reasonable, maybe even generous, payoff when the coach was deemed to be a "total". I have a very different perspective now about insurance. Safeco has earned my loyalty and I will never again shop insurance based solely on premium amount.

I'm glad to hear that you had a good experience with Safeco. I just received by renewal and the rates increased 23% over last year. Not sure why this would happen, nothing has changed in our lives... I am about to start shopping around. I still may but will likely stay with them unless I find something else compelling with one of the majors.

Islandsmith ... if you have Autos too on your Safeco policy, inquire about their Right Track program. We got a 23% rate reduction through using a monitoring device in our autos. This doesn't work for motorhomes but can significantly reduce overall premium.

You might want to try The Hartford thru AARP. We've had USAA (progressive), National General (Good Sam), and now The Hartford. Best rates we've found, sound coverage, one windshield claim four years ago, and one claim when the awning decided to unass the coach while driving Eastbound in Montana on I-90 on a windy day. Quick payment, no increase in premiums in either case, can't say enough of them . . . but I still shop around every year.

Hartford through AARP was the cheapest recently for our auto. (We compare prices every few years.) They also have a monitoring device that monitors your driving habits for 6m. At the end of 6m., depending on your driving, you get an additional discount. We got the max. -25% off their already low price... very happy.

We have a menagerie. 3 vehicles, 2 RV's consisting of 2013 Corolla, 2014 FJ Cruiser, 2007 Nissan Pathfinder, 2007 Forest River 17BH Travel trailer and a 2005 Fleetwood Expedition 34M all bundled with home insurance. Vehicle portion is about $1500 a year. State Farm. Just a data point. YMMV.
