Insurance gripe?
Calling around for insurance for our soon to be new motor home and was totally confused when I was charged extra for not having a propane sensor. I told her is was a electric coach and has no propane on board she said that I would still lose the credit. Some day I think I am a genius living among idiots or am I the idiot living among geniuses?

I guess that Ins Co and others will have to get with the program. This is not the RV that their parents drove .

I know it sounds stupid, but what kind of credit do you get if you have one. They are cheap to buy and it couldn't hurt to have one. If the credit is alot I would just put one in to satisfy the bean counters. Some campgrounds are pretty tight and your neighbor could be leaking propane your way....Mike

Also... Just thinking out loud...
Doesn't those detectors also detect carbon-monoxide? Wouldn't you want/need one for when you boon-dock and run the generator?
Maybe kill two birds with one stone ???

Gary, Just a question....your current coach has LP, but your new coach won't have it?

^^ This. I think you can pick one up from Walmart for a very reasonable price if your insurance savings warrant it.

A CO/LP detector can be around $80-$100 depending on where you get it. Check Amazon or Walmart.com for probably the best prices. RV stores will be closer to the $100 mark.

I don't want to buy a sensor. My thinking is a electric coach is safer as far as gas explosions so there should be a discount for not having any propane?

Some may but the one in my Winnebago does not. I have two separate sensors. The CO sensor is in the bedroom on the ceiling and the LP sensor is in the hall down close to the floor.

That would be my thinking too, but the insurer probably doesn't have that option in their rating tables. The selling agent cannot apply a discount that doesn't exist, no matter how logical it is. You can ask to speak to a supervisor at the agency and try to get them to request a special "no propane" rate from the actual insurer (underwriter), but don't hold your breath waiting for it. The actuarial wheels turn very slowly...
A basic LP detector is $50-$60, so it is questionable if the discount is worth the purchase.

Find out the difference in premiums and if it makes sense go buy one. If you save a $100 bucks of so for a year or 2 then it is worth the investment. Don't get caught up in wording.
