Insurance Question

For years, we have used Progressive as our insurer for our RV’s. Recently, our son (active duty mil) switched from USAA to Geico and saved a ton on his two cars. We began to think....and yesterday contacted Geico for our Class C. We went down our Progressive insurance policy with Geico and in some instances we added more to Geico. Well.... our Progressive policy is $1296 yr and Geico, $546 yr.
My question is... does anyone carry Geico on their RV and do you feel they are reputable enough to make the switch? Progressive keeps increasing every year...I believe they all do, but Progressive has increased rather significantly. We have never had to use our insurance, thankfully, so why the increases???

Penny for your thoughts....

I don't know for sure. However, it seems that after you've had a company for a few years with no claims, they really want you to move along. I guess each year increases the possibility that you might have a claim and they want to keep your premiums up to that point and hopefully push your claim off on the next guy.

Even if they only get it right 1% of the time, 1% of a bizillion dollars is a lot of money.

We carried Geico Insurance a while back. Had a tornado come through that laid a tree over the front cap of the motorhome. The motorhome ended up being totaled. Our coverage was for actual cash value so I figured we'd be disappointed with the payout. To our surprise, it was fair and actually much larger than I thought we would receive.

It's been years since but they certainly provided excellent and quick service back then.

You don't need to worry about Geico or any of the dozen+ major insurers being "reputable". Despite some wild accusations on the internet (source of all truth, right?), insurers don't cheat on legitimate claims, any more than a Las Vegas casino fixes the games. Neither of them need to - the odds are already much in their favor. Most big complaints turn out to be misunderstandings of what the insurance covers.

That doesn't mean the appraiser doesn't occasionally cheap out on some item. I've had them deduct for wear & tear on a windshield wiper motor and chickenshit like that, but most they are straight.

Changing companies often results in lower premiums. Most companies have lower premiums for new customers to help them win business. They jack up the rates over the next couple renewals and hope you keep on paying. The other thing that happens when changing companies is that you get your situation and vehicle values re-considered and you often fit into a different category with different rates. I've had this go both ways - either higher or lower. If higher, I just keep on shopping.

Quoted because I couldn't have said it better myself. I always suggest that you sit down with your current (or prospective) agent and talk about what you need coverage for and what you don't need. There is no "standard policy" for anything. Every policy is different. You need to know what you're actually buying. Talking to your agent is the best way to figure out what you're paying for. Tell them that you want to spend an hour talking about various situations to make sure you've got the coverage you think you have. They aren't nearly as busy as they might seem and they can answer any questions you might have.

I have an uncle who retired from Farm Bureau a few years ago. When you ask for a "standard policy" you just get whatever the agent needs to fill a quota. If you discuss insurance with them for a while, you'll get the policy that you need.

What companies aside from Progressive do full-timer insurance?
