Inverter Question?

We currently have a Xantrex Freedom 458 Inverter/Charger and while it works very well I am not excited about the Modified Sine Ware conversion. My question is ..... Can we keep the battery charger function of the Xantrex & disable the Inverter function ... Purchase a Pure Sine Wave Inverter (without the battery charger)? Or .... Will we need to " junk/sell" the Xantrex and purchase a complete new Charger/Pure Sine Wave Inverter combo unit?

Cheers

I don't think the 458 has any way to "turn off" the inverter, but it's academic if you remove the 120v circuits connected to its power outlet and move them to another inverter. If the 458 is wired to a subpanel that supplies some number of house circuits with 120v power, simply move that power feed to the new inverter.

Be aware, though, that the 458 also has an automatic transfer switch function built in, which senses when input power is lost and switches the inverter function on. You lose that also, and have to come up with some other means of activating the another inverter and assuring that the inverter is NEVER, ever on when shore or generator power is also on. Because if that ever happened, sparks would fly and smoke would pour...

Probably better off selling the 458 and buying another inverter/charger with transfer switch. Even at that, you may find that the remote for the 458 also has to be repalced.

Have you had trouble with the MSW inverter?
Own any appliances that don't work correctly on it?
Why change it if it works?

Our runs everything in our coach without a problem. TV's, DVD's, computers laptops cel phone chargers, ipod chargers, and of course hair dryer, coffee pot, and even the microwave.

Good point. Since we seldom use the inverter, I probably should have started this thread by asking if those using a Xantrex Freedom 458 were experiencing any problems with the Modified Sine Wave. My concern was that if we started using the inverter more were we putting things like our TV's, our computers, Etc "at risk".....and was there an economical way to upgrade to Pure Sine Wave while taking advantage of the good aspects of the Freeedom 458.

It would appear that if we really want PSWave we need an expensive upgrade & yet this may be totally unnecessary since the Freedom's MSWave appears to work just fine with most things.
