Issues with B &W 20k Companion Hitch Coming Loose ? Dropped 5 th

it happened after second use. We dropped the Fifth Wheel on the truck. Anyone have this issue ? Came loose after moving it about 6 ft to get it off the blocks. Crunched tailgate

Is there a possible recall on this hitch? Release handle was properly pinned, therefore we had to unpin, to reconnect.

Thanks for any help. We have insurance , but what a day. :(

Any advice ? Thx for any help.

Sounds like you may have been high pinned. Meaning the jaws were closed but the pin was actually sitting on top of the jaws. A visual after hitching is the only way to check that.

Very sorry about your truck

High hitching is a fairly common occurrence. I was warned about it when we bought our 5th wheel hitch so I always scooted under the 5th wheel and looked at how the pin connected with the hitch. I caught a high hitch condition more than once. I also did a "pull test" before retracting the landing gear all the way. Sorry for your troubles.

It helps to make sure that the hitch actually lifts the trailer about an 1/2 to 1 inch after making contact when hitching.
