When that happened to wife and I (We were already gone) I sent a letter back explalining and telling them anticipated date of return.

They sent out an amended notice.... Smack dab after return so we were able to make it without issue.

My wife received her call about the time we were set to leave for our annual long RV trip last year. A quick call and she was rescheduled. She was called a couple months later but was then excused as the case was settled out of court. I have never to date been called though she has had a summons twice in the past 10 or so years. We don't get advance notice - it's always a surprise. Usually a polite call to the clerk will move your scheduled date.

Surely the notification letter included procedures to follow if you can't make it. Every jury duty notice I've received has done so. Although I've only had to reschedule once, they were very accommodating.

Our county allows reschedule via mail for just this reason.

You simply fill out a preferred date and return it.

Week of Thanksgiving and Christmas are good selections as seldom do they start trials in those weeks and you seldom get the notice back.

Most times if you give a date when you're available they will re-schedule your appearance.
I got mailed a notice and the appearance date was in the middle of our planned west -> east -> west trip to Nova Scotia and back. I called the number provided and when asked for a return date I said whenever we get back and the girl laughed and asked me how old I was and said they would exempt DW and I from future jury duty calls because of our advanced age.

Sometimes it's cool to be this old.

One thing about being a resident alien (DW and I are UK citizens) is that you can't serve on a jury if called.

I have been getting Jury Duty calls every two years since back in the 70s, the next one I will tell them I'm over 75, don't care to serve any more. The DW has never been called for jury Duty, maybe now that I am too old they will pick on her.

A simple call explaining we have plans gets a deferment here.

That's the standard practice in Northern Virginia. Nobody really expects you to turn around and come back when you can just reschedule. Just be sure to communicate. You can't just not show up.

Just saying..
Don't try telling *that* to the judge. The legal presumption in all states is that you received anything placed into the mail. And don't worry, the court will be able to show it mailed the notice.

I also got many summons over the years. In my early career I traveled a lot for the government and was always excused. Later we fostered and adopted special needs kids and were their sole support...again excused. Then came the one I had waited for, I was old enough for a permanent exemption.

Try that with a major credit card payment!
And yes, I was taught that in Business Law but try to get a creditor to follow it.

I cant believe what you people have gone through getting doctors notes and such.
I have been called up twice and all i did was call with the my reason they just said they would excuse me.
The one time i had a business deal going. The other I made up an excuse that was pretty feeble. I was going hunting and the trip was planned.
My Lawyer buddy said they call a hundred or so depending on the case.
I love the USA but Canada has a lot of differences when it comes to Government.
Also when we get a summons for Jury Duty there is a declaration on the back to send in why you can't attend. WE filled it out for the DW who is handy capped and they took her off any future cases.
WE also seem to have a months notice.

At the very least, if you explain that you are away on extended holiday they should roll your dates over to a future event. My son received one over his Easter break from college this year. The guy we had to see at the local courthouse was sort of being a jerk by telling him "we will revisit this" when my son showed him his enrollment credentials. Sure enough, the day we pulled in from moving him home for the summer his updated notice was waiting in the mailbox. The date was two days before we were scheduled to leave for vacation. He ended up being excused on the day before we departed after the seats were filled. Whew....we were sweating it a little.
