Jury Duty Notice Right In The Middle of Trip!

Loading up the RV to head out on the 7th of July for our first extended trip and I get a Jury Duty Notice in Friday's mail. The service date is right smack in the middle of our month and a half trip to Canada!

Wife was very cool and said we could drive back and head out again, which was a big surprise as I figured she would be angry. 900 miles one-way.

I wrote a letter and will call or visit Monday. I will fulfill my obligation, just wanted to vent.

Explain what you have had planned, they will excuse you.

Shot notice for jury duty , try to reset for a month after you get back.
Most times if you give a date when you're available they will re-schedule your appearance.

They sent that out with no prior notice? That's not very nice of MO. In my county in OH, I'm notified 6 months ahead of time. Even then, don't necessarily have to serve unless called.

How is it one careless match can start a forest fire but it takes a whole box to start a campfire?

That depends on the jurisdiction. Some are easy to deal with; others make it as difficult as possible. The last time I got a summons for Tempe, AZ, I would have had to actually show up on the show up date to get excused.

In no way should you interrupt your trip. Just tell them that you will be out of the country until your return date. They will need jurors after your return and they can reschedule you then.

Same thing happened to me. First time I got called we had just moved, and a quick call was all it took to remove me from the list.

Several years later I was notified of jury service just a day after I was activated with FEMA to report for a disaster assignment. Another short call and I was asked when I would be available. I said 5 months and they said "OK, we will put you back into the pot then but would you please fax us your task order for the assignment?", and I did.

About 2 years ago I was called again. We were 2,000 miles away and wouldn't be home for 3 months. I called again and the court clerk said "no problem, we will put you back into the pot".

I felt bad, but for some reason they always notify me when I am not home! My wife has never been called for jury duty and my poor son in law has had to report twice.

There's no reason you should go back for jury duty. We never did. All you have to do is tell them you'll be out of the country at that time.

I'll add my voice to the "Just call and tell them you are out of the country" chorus. Washington usually gives you about 6 weeks notice, I actually like Jury duty, but did have to decline once as I was scheduled to be on the other side of the globe at the time, and it simply wasnt possible. They said "Not a Problem, we'll just put you back in the pot" About a year later got another one. That time I served.

We took a trip and when we got back I found a Jury Duty notice in the mail that the post office had been holding for me. The day that I was supposed to show up had already passed. I called the court house and explained that we had been on a trip. The clerk said no problem and she would put me on the list for the next Jury call.

I got a Jury Duty summon right in the middle of my wife cancer treatment. I had to get a note from the doctor that I was the sole caretaker of my wife. They were kind enough to excuse me.

My Daddy had dementia and was no longer able to serve on a jury when he got as notice to report from the city of Phoenix, AZ. My Mama had to get a doctor's report to get him excused. The city excused him for one year (like he was going to recover from dementia?). Fortunately, he was never called up again.

Unless the jury duty summons is sent certified or return reciept, no proof you ever received it.

Just saying..
