Kohler Generator.
Hi, does anybody know where i can get Kohler Generator parts? I have a 5CKM 21 model (gasoline)It has always started first time. However it now wont start. It turns over fine, there is gasoline there, the choke is fine, but when i took a plug out and earthed ( ground)it then cranked it over the spark seemed weak.I'm thinking maybe the coil has packed up, but don't know where to find parts for it.

Hi, Welcome to the forum.
By your profile, it looks like you are in England so I can't really help with sourcing parts. Google Kohler dealers in England is the best I could suggest.
However, if you are seeing a spark across the plug, I doubt the coil is the problem. If you can see a spark, that's about all you can confirm visually.
Is the plug wet with gasoline? If it's dry after cranking with the choke on, you likely have a fuel problem. Try removing the air intake and pouring a teaspoon or so of gasoline into the carburetor. If it fires, that tells you it's a fuel issue.
Check to see you have at least a 1/4 tank of fuel, check the fuel filter, check the fuel pump to confirm it's delivering fuel during cranking. Check the condition of the fuel line to see if it's restricting fuel.
New set of spark plugs are also a consideration.
Typically these coils will fail when they are hot.
Good luck.

Hi, i have tried all of that, but it wont start.Fuel pump is ok, plenty of petrol(sorry gasoline) in the tank, air cleaner ok etc etc, it just wont fire up.Thought perhaps it might be low oil, but thats fine too.Yes im in England and i restore classic American cars over here, so im ok with engines etc.I just cant put my finger on the problem.

I had a Airstream motorhome with a Kohler. Kohler used a motorcycle coil in their generators. If you determine it is the coil, You might remove and match it up with a coil from a motorcycle dealer.

If it has fuel and has a spark the only thing left is low compression. Have you checked since plugs are going to be out?

Back in the 40's my dad repaired chainsaws. One make that they used had Villiers motors (125 & 250 cc) that had poor ignitions. He always said about spark "If it's white- it's right, Blue will do, and Red is dead" Have you put around a tea-spoon of gas (petrol) in the sparkplug hole and tried it? How are the magnets for the magneto? Air gap? Good luck.

Villiers engines, yes i remember them. They were also used in some motorbikes.I'm ok with the word gas.I took the plugs out yesterday and cranked it over with a finger over the plug hole, there was compression.Next put some gas in each bore, put the plugs in and tried to start it, no go.When the plugs were out i checked that there was spark at each one, there was. However i'm putting new plugs in today and see what happens.

Did you check the voltage on the coil? I had a similar problem where the voltage was low and or not at all. It wound up being a flakey relay in the control panel.
