Laminate flooring from Lumber Liquidators
There was a special on 60 Minutes about the dangers of laminate flooring from Lumber Liquidators.
They are buying flooring from China with extremely high levels of formaldehyde, as much as 20 times the maximum allowable levels! This is a known cancer-causing agent, as well as causing asthma, COPD, and other breathing problems!
60 Minutes bought laminate flooring from locations all over the USA and had it tested by independent labs, and ALL of it failed the tests.
60 Minutes actually went to three factories in China that supply product to Lumber Liquidators, posing as potential buyers, and were told and shown where they deliberately mis-label the flooring, saying that it meets the allowable levels, but admitting that it doesn't! They were wearing covert cameras to prove this!
Hope none of you have used laminate flooring from these people!

No wonder I feel so good!
I replaced my entire house with that same product two years ago. I will be replacing my RV flooring this year.

Common in laminate flooring unless it comes from northern Europe.
However their engineered wood products like Bellawood don't have those issues. Just avoid anything with particle board in it. These chemicals are common is all chip board, hardboard, particle board, MDF etc. no matter where you buy them.

Jay, it's true that all laminate flooring has formaldehyde in it, but it's not supposed to harm you at the recommended maximum levels. These people are deliberately cheating on those levels so they can buy it cheap and sell it cheap! I wouldn't want to risk my family's health to save a few bucks!

I hear ya. I get the part about the extremely high levels. Just didn't want folks to think you can buy laminate flooring with zero.
You also have to be careful about 60 min stories. They tend to have an agenda. Just verify it elsewhere.

The 60 min's report Joe is referring to was brought about (more than likely) due to some hedge fund shorting the Lumber Liquidators stock claiming they're making profit illegally. 60 min's proof of this was as Joe mentioned, going to the factory and finding out from the factory owner that they mislabel the product for LL to reduce costs in compliance with CARB-whatever# standard (some CA regulation about the amount of vapors allowed to escape from products like this).
The factory owner verified that the product was being mislabeled to save costs and that if the "potential buyer" wanted REAL CARB-compliant material, it would cost them more than what LL is buying their product for.
I watched the report and it appeared to be exposing some wrong doing but I'm sure this is like being able to see all the stars in the entire universe, just the ones we currently see in our own galaxy are practically uncountable, can't imagine how much more widespread this type of "stuff" goes on with the "global economy".

I've got 900 square feet of their thickest laminate in my basement. Fortunately we don't go down there that often.
It's going to stay right where it is.

Same thing with sheet rock a few years ago. I think it had asbestos in it . It is sad what some companies will do to turn a profit.

Now is exactly when to buy the stock ("Buy low, sell . . .").
