Leaving RV parked at designated location for emergency trip home

I guess this would be called a fishing expo but I'm going to ask anyway. Back in the 70's-90's when my family had 2 earlier MH's and it's experience, I had heard of some RV'ers leaving their RVs at a designated location to make a rush trip home for emergency and not having to take the RV back. One family had 3 weeks vacation, had just arrived at their vacation spot 900 miles away, and found about a death in the family that they needed to go to the funeral. They left their RV where they parked it and drove 16 hours back in their toad to their home, took care of business, funeral and all and then 16 hours back leaving their RV for a week where it was parked. Another family from Fla was in Calif and flew back to Fla on an emergency trip. My question is.....Since I've been out of RV'ing for 20 years or so, what is the preference of if something like that were to happen and we wanted to return to the RV to continue our excursion/trip/vacation. I know that spaces fill up quicker now and that RV dealers probably wouldn't want you to leave your RV for liability purposes unattended. Just trying to see about all around reasons for not driving the RV back when we were going to continue the trip anyway. Any ideas??? Thanks for all your input.

Well, you don't really have a lot of choices. RV park, storage lot or just leave it in some random spot. I sure wouldn't consider the 3rd option so only the first two would be available for me. Of course, you could always drive the RV back. Shouldn't take a whole lot more time than driving the toad.

I suppose you could get on your friendly internet forum and ask for some local suggestions. Who knows, someone just might have space in the backyard you could use.

Last summer we had a couple trips planned to Michigan. The second trip would require us to take the exact same route as the first for the first part of the trip. Rather than take the MH home only to turn around 30 days later and drive the same route I called around looking for a place to leave the MH. Passed on quite a few places because they weren't secure IMHO. Ended up leaving it in a storage area at a Jellystone park. They were the most reasonably priced and secure. Didn't feel real good about it but all was well when we returned to pick it up.

I would be very hesitant to leave it in a storage lot. A friend of mine owns one. All fenced and "secured". It is constantly broken into with resultant loss and damage to campers.

Hi Mike! Welcome to IRV2! We're sure glad you joined the gang!

I guess I don't see the problem. You just get a campground site and pay for the number of days you will be gone.

Good luck, happy trails, and God bless!

We did it twice although not for emergencies. One time we were south and wanted to visited family at Christmas but certainly didn't want to drive the RV up north at that time of year. Our camping neighbor had a relative nearby with room to store it. Worked out well.

The second time we took the ferry from Washington to Alaska and stored it in a RV park's overflow area. We stayed in the RV in that area the previous night and the first night we returned. We didn't need hookups and the overflow area was nice and quiet and we didn't disturb anyone early morning when we left or later evening when we returned.

The RV parks didn't want a RV sitting unattended for a long period of time. Their rules. Also, it was much cheaper to store off-site.

I've heard of others who took a cruise and stored their RV while gone.

We recently took a trip to Florida and had a house for the week. Found an RV park close by that also had a storage lot. Worked perfect for us and was $20 for the week.

My first 2 years on the road I still worked part time. Had to go home to San Diego a couple of times for meetings. One trip I was in Omaha NE visiting my son and grand kids. Was staying in a state park. Called the local KOA and put it in their storage lot for a week. I think I paid $50. Another time I was visiting a friend in Ft Collins CO. Parked in his ally back of his house next to his garage and took a shuttle to Denver airport.

I am now a member of the Escapees RV Club and most of their RV Parks or Co-Ops have a storage area. Not sure where your travels will take you but I would check with any and all local RV Parks who may have a cost effective storage area.

What MShappycamper said, we were in Alaska when our house sold so we left the MH in Palmer at an rv park and flew home to empty the house. Flew back and continued the trip.

We had to make an emergency trip back home a couple years ago when my brother died.. We left the MH at an RV park in AZ, paid the full week, and drove home.
