Gas prices in the Monterey area have dipped slight and diesel has dropped quite a bit and is now at $3.99 for the cash price at a couple of locations.

In the old days the oil company profits jacked up the cost for fuel. Nowadays 70% of the people in the oil futures markets are bankers including Goldman Sachs, and Chase that are speculating with their customers' money and driving up the refineries cost for each barrel of oil.

The Goldman Sachs investments manager estimates that more than 30% of the price of oil is the result of speculators in the market. That is why even with production up and consumption down the cost of gas at the pumps has been hardly affected at all. So every time I fill up my truck I am giving $45 to the bankers (the same people that tanked the US economy).

All I can do is use gasbuddy.com and drive my 45 MPG Prius as my primary vehicle.

As a followup on this thread, I noticed gas prices in my area fall continously over the Memorial Day weekend. I guess the anticipated gas gouging missed my town.

HOUSTON -- Retail gasoline prices across Texas have dropped an average 6 cents this week in a slide that began two months ago.

AAA Texas on Thursday reported the average price per gallon has settled at $3.38. Gasoline prices nationally also fell 6 cents to reach an average $3.56 per gallon.

AAA says it's the eighth week in a row for declining retail gasoline prices in Texas, where a year ago the cost was $3.59 per gallon.

We're at $4.09 but it was higher before memorial day weekend. It started dropping about a week before, but it was still cheaper in AZ when we went to visit family that weekend.

Gotta love the sunny state of rip you off any chance you can get... uhhh, I mean California.

As the OP I thought I'd follow up. Gas is "down" to $3.64/gal. When the 10 cent increase occurred gas was $3.63/gal.

The other thing I have noticed is that the gap between grades is increasing. It used to be that everybody was 10 cents between grades. ($3.64, $3.74, $3.84 for reg, mid, and premium). Now I'm noticing pricing like $3.64, $3.76, $3.88).

Anyway I appreciate all the postings here. It's really interesting to see the different prices around the country. I'm happy for all of you that are in the low 3's.

Safe travels.

Another way to gouge us. Lower the price, but jack up the difference between grades. They'll never stop.

I remember in the `70s in Flagstaff, AZ, all the stations were the same price and the difference in grades was 3-5 cents.

Yup, gas prices have been drifting down since before Memorial Day. Today, according to Gas Buddy, prices vary from $3.49 to $3.57. Maybe by the 4th of July prices will be closer to $3.00 (not holding breath ).
