Leveling jack springs

I've got a broken return spring on one of the Jacks on my 99 Alpine. I've read where getting them from the manufacturer ( whose name escapes me at the moment) is a pain and somewhat lengthy and costly undertaking. So I'm driving down the road one night ( as I do every nite) and it hits me...wonder if I could modify a garage door spring?? So I'm wondering if anyone has tried this or even considered it? I realise it would take some modifications but wondering if it's doable

I think you would be disappointed with the results. My limited experience with springs taught me that they are designed with a purpose in mind. Some are compression type others are torsion type, etc. I replaced mine with the recommended type, and have had no further problems. I hope this helps.

Interesting idea. I just checked Amazon, they have several for around $13.

If I had a broken spring, I'd give it a try.. Maybe look at the kind that stretch.. I'd need to consider how to make the spring the correct length, It looks like they come in 25 inch length. Possibly cut it to 10 inch, then need to figure out how to form a hook on the cut end. Possibly heat it with a torch to bend it.

Amazon also has the original springs, a 2 pack runs about $35 -$40

there is no reason for any delay in getting new springs. they are available thru hwh corp. just call and ask to buy springs. be ready to supply the ap number off the jack.
also thru stuarts in elkhart indiana, on amazon, ebay, ppl rv in houston etc, etc. the garage springs will work somewhat, in an emergency, but wont do the job of the real thing.

I appreciate all the feedback all it has to do is pull the cylinder back up it's not like I'm pulling the landing gear up on a 747 did not know Amazon have the original Springs I have read on here that they are costly and take several weeks to get that's why I was considering another option

I replaced all of my springs when I bought the 2000 Damon. One spring was broken, so I took it to a garage door company. They make springs from long stock of various sizes because of different weights of doors. Long story short I came away with (8) springs for about $4.00 ea. They bend the ends to make a hook. Also, I had them use a slightly smaller dia. spring stock, to make installing them easier for me. Yes, they retract a little slower, but they work.

I've gone right to HWH as azpete suggests and bern very satisfied w price and delivery.
I figure if I ever need help w my jacks I'm going to need HWH help....Amazon won't help me at all. Tech service is worth giving them a little business!
