when we picked up our coach in WI ... we flew in from AZ with bank check in hand for the agreed amount, made certain the title had been signed & notarized by the PO. He left his plate on the coach along with his registration and we drove back to Phoenix. We had called our insurance agent prior and had the policy effective date to be the pick up date .... Then simply sent title & bill of sale to DMV for title change and new registration ...

as an insurance agent, and a fulltimer in a 14ThorPalazzo33.3DP, i always remind customers who are purchasing a private party vehicle that they are not allowed to keep previous owner plates(tag) on the vehicle since it is no longer the previous owners and most state laws prohibit it. I advise best practice to leave no tag on the rv, but carry the 'bill of sale' and your insurance documents showing newly insured.
Though most of us hesitate about riding with no tag, you will have an easier time explaining a new purchase versus explaining a stolen vehicle.
Just an FYI : )

Totally agree MisterT, "Most" states allow the transfer with the bill of sale, and insurance papers. Only some cowboy cop looking to harass someone would ticket.
