Did anyone out there get caught in the Indiana Turnpike closing mess last Saturday? Seams like the state closed the Turnpike between exit 2 and 5 due to standing water on the road from Thursday's rain. We were shuttled off the pike and at the top of the ramp there was no signs which way to go to detour around the pike. We sat in total grid lock taking more than 6 hours to go 14 miles. Indiana gets the old laugh In Fickled Finger Award.

Were you traveling east or west? In either case you could have taken Indiana alt20 to the next interchange. Of course I have the advantage of a map in front of me to check on.

We use CoPilot on our laptop and had the advantage of a map as well. The main problem was the general confussion at the top of the ramp and for the first several miles around the exit as those without a clue tried to decide which way to go. Then grid lock at traffic lights set in and traffic snarled. Once we were able to pull into a parking lot and get our route set we were not lost, just terribly tied up in grumper to grumper traffic with no police presence and no signage. One good thing, we did travel a bit on the origional alignment for the Lincoln Highway and got to read the roadside markers. My comment was aimed at the lack or regard of the officialdom for the motoring public.

The same thing happens in Florida. For whatever reason, police close a road and everyone is left to fend for themselves. There are police around. They are too busy eating donuts and drinking who knows what (really). As soon as they block the road with their cars, it's like they left the planet, until given the order to go someplace else.

That's a heartbreak. Detoured off a main highway and nowhere to go. Road atlas' do not show enough detail to help. That's when a CB radio is useful.

MarvH,
Fair! I guess one needs to define fair. It is true. Personal experience, several incidents over several years. If it was a single incident, I would never mention it. However, several incidents over a long period of time, establishes a trend. That tells me there is something wrong with the process. Victims of a failed process are usually the first to figure it out. In Florida, there is obviously no concern (by the local sherrif's office) for citizens that find themselves lost due to "police activity". This creates a really big traffic hazard. It is unfortuante, because it is easily solved.

Rebelsbeach,Yes, it is still here. If the housing market had not went south, the developer would be almost gone and Ben Sutton would too.

GaryD, I assume that you are on the inside to have all this info. And I've never been a policeman, so I don't have an ax to grind. I just know that if they all parked and ate donuts, it would be a big mess out there! MarvH
