Lots of cash
In planning this newbies upcoming first cross-country trip (Illinois to Fresno, CA and back), I have been reading about fuel stops and campgrounds which seem like they would be the biggest outlays of my vacation spending.
I had been planning on using my credit cards so that I wouldn't have to carry much cash.
But I see where it seems like you can get more discounts for using cash at the fuel stops (just gas), and I have been on too many campground sites where they say their discounts are only given if you use cash.
So, in order to do this the most economical way, do I have to depend mostly on cash???
Or am I missing something here? What have you more experienced travelers found?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Hello:
I use credit card and get the 5% back on fuel and don't forget the checks equal cash most all of the time.

The few truck stops that'd have used consider a debit card as cash.

Yeah, I sure wouldn't be worried about having to carry too much cash. ATMs are everywhere.
I would estimate that somewhere around 10% of the CGs we've stayed at either required cash or offered a discount for it. Not a big deal. Fuel is a little bigger deal but nearly every filling station has an ATM these days.
Don't carry too much cash... just draw a few hundred at a time from ATMs as you travel.

I use credit cards that give me double points for fuel (way better then the few dollars I would save using cash). You might want to consider giving your credit card company a heads-up that you will be traveling and using your credit cards... beats having them refused because the cards "fraud protection" kicked in. This happened to me several times before I had permanent notes added to our account that we have an RV and expect large fuel charges moving across the country. Just a thought...

CC for most all purchases - for ease and points. PenFed for fuel - 5% cash back each month.
Usually keep a few hundred cash in pocket for incidentals, the occasional yard or antique sale, ham radio acquisition, etc. And for if the credit card is not accepted or has issue (see the note above above travel notice to avoid incorrect fraud shut-down).

When we travel, we have some cash, but everything else is on the CC. If anything happens to the MH we do not have to worry about getting some items out. We also call the CC companies and let them know that we will be traveling and what areas of the country we will be in.
Once traveling through OR, we got fuel at a little place and their policy was not cash for big purchases. There reason was that cash could be stolen in a robbery.

Be careful!!
Coming back from Fresno and Phoenix last year we stopped to fuel up at a Shell/mini mart. Went in and was surprised to find I still had $500 cash left. Counted it out and told her which pump I was at. Pump stopped at $400, went back and told her to go ahead with the last $100. She denied that I had given her $500. I had no witnesses and no way to prove what I had given her.
Next time I'll have the clerk sign a note as to how much I gave them before I leave the counter.

Most national truck stops normally charge extra to use your CC unless you have one of their cards. So if you have their card or one that will give you $$ or points, you're okay, otherwise...look for a smaller diesel station to refuel.
