Low clearances
Couple years ago, there was an internet site that you could print out and it would list all the road underpasses with less than 14ft clearance in all the lower 48. Can't find it now, just some non-printable sites or links to GPS systems. Anyone know of a site where I could print out overpass data for the lower 48?

A trucker version of a GPS, or a truckers atlas works great

A trucker atlas which you can find at just about any truck stop. You might want to get the version that is like a ring binder, makes it easier to fold back and keep it at certain pages. It is otherwise known as a "Motor Carriers Road Atlas". The Deluxe version is the one with the spiral binding and laminated pages. They also have a Large Scale version of the same which just means it is a larger in printing and stuff which makes it a littler easier to read. We actually will spend the extra money every few years to get an updated large scale one. It's become just about the only paper map we get anymore.

There was a specialized POI for my Rand McNally GPS that I installed on the GPS. This will warn of low clearances. Unfortunately it warns of any clearance in a radius you specify, not necessarily on the route you are on. You have to do some interpretation of the results.
The POI files are available at POI Factory. These files are available for both Rand McNally (CSV) and Tom Tom (OV2) formats. I am unsure about the Garmin format.

There is a subscription site called lowclearances.com Not sure about printable stuff, though. It's mostly for POI data. There is also a low clearance app for smart phones.
The AITA has a website for finding low clearance bridges by state. Maybe that's what you remember?

This is the one from lowclearances.com. It nearly drove me nuts!

Hi GS
Glad to have you here with us. I used a truckers atlas before getting a GPS that warns of low underpasses. The atlas's are available at almost any truck stop.
Happy Trails!!

All low underpass' s should be plainly marked. In my 5million miles driving a OTR rig I never hit a bridge, sometimes when flatbedding I hauled loads as high as 14ft 7in across country. As said above, the Truckers Road Atlas from Rand McNally is a excellent source. They are readily available at most truck stops. The best thing about this source it is in black and white and will be correct. Professional drivers depend on it everyday.

This may be the one you're referring to. Try http://aitaonline.com which is the America's Independent Truckers association site. Click on the INFORMATION button, then the state you're interested in, and then open
Low Clearance/Bridge Heights/Restricted Rules
in the menu. This lists all the restrictions for that state. Hope this helps.

OK, thanks for the advice. I guess I'll get the truckers pub. Does anyone know offhand if it covers off-interstate roads? Thanks to all for the info!

If you have a smartphone/I-phone there is an app called ALLSTAYS that will give that info. You can actually filter out the clearances you want (or don't want). It's about $10 but it has all sorts of other "stuff" and it does have low bridge clearances on all roads.
