Marys rock tunnel skyline drive height?

I am getting mixed information.. 13 feet , 12ft 8 inches, 14 feet ...
Some say it is ok in the middle If you hold traffic...


I have been through it twice but my other motorhomes were shorter. I am now 12' 10" .. will I make it?

RVs, camping trailers, and horse trailers are welcome, but be prepared to shift into low gear. Also, be sure you will clear Marys Rock Tunnel (just south of Thornton Gap entrance from Route 211) at 12’8”.


Has anyone gone through with a 12' 10 inch rig? Most of the time they list the height near the side so I am thinking there might be enough in the middle.

If you are near a truck stop, go in and buy the Truckers Road Atlas. There is a section in the front that lists height restrictions by state and highway and then tells you where it is on that highway. It is an invaluable tool when planning a trip.

Personally.... I would not take the chance.. I will say this however.

Get yourself two things.. One is a laser level (Any hardware/home improvement) and the other is a tape measure.

Stick the tape measure up (Hang it from a tree near your rig or tape it to a wall higher than your rig (At least 13 feet of tape needs to be showing))

Now take the level, to the highest point in your rig Keeping it level turn it and see if it "Paints" anything,, YES< move to what it painted, NO see where it paints the tape.

A rig that is 12' 10" empty, may be 12'6" fully loaded.

Still.. that's a bit too close for MY personal comfort... I've taken my 12'6" empty under a 12'6" overpass, but trust me... Was not at all comfortable.

I was just in Shenandoah for Memorial Day.

Came in at Thorton Gap with a 13' rig and then turned me around and told me to go to the Swift Run Gap entrance and drive North on Skyline Drive to get to Big Meadows. Even though the 12-8 height is on the outer edge of the lane, they would not permit me to ride down the middle of the road.

We have rear facing cameras on the back and both sides...why not on the roof looking forward ????

I have often considered doing sometihng like that.. And as it turns out it would be very very easy, THe wires are almost all there already.. I will tell you how I'd do it on MY rig

First. I have 3 wast tanks but FOUR roof vents.. Ok, one of them is a dummy, it's really a cable port (they make real good cable ports) under the "lid" is a 12 volt pair and a coax. 72ohm, exactly what I need for a video camera

There are many cameras I could mount nearby, Hook them to the 12 volt leads for power and the coax for video.. This coax comes into my "Sat receiver" compartment marked "SAT ANTENNA" or some such...

Extend it down the "A" pillar under the dash where the "B" input for the back up monitor is.. Now I already use this input but switches cost something like eight bucks at Big Lots. Might be up to 10 or 12 now.

Switch to "B" on the monitor, "A" (For Above) on the aux switch and there you are.

Switch to "C" on the aux switch (it is a 3 way) and I have the "Gas Cap Cam" (it is at the same point on my rig as the gas cap, some 30 feet behind the driver, so when the gas pump is centered on the monitor..... I'm in position to gas up) If I ever put in a 3rd camera (Say one in line with the sewer fittings) that will go to "B"

I've not yet purchased the camera yet,, but I do plan on it.

E-Bay has a lot of pedestal mounted cameras perfect for this kind of thing.

The only issue I see is keeping the lens clean. Our coach has no ladder. I do have a 15' telescopic but getting it out and putting a cushion on to protect the paint becomes a PITA.

Sounds about right:
depends on whos manning the entrance at the time: some attendents get their jollies giveing motorhomers a hard time. (please don't ask me how I know)
I have seen tour busses going down the middle of the tunnels.

At the entrance station, they asked me where I was going (Great Meadows which is south and through the tunnel) and my height.

My 99 adventurer they never asked, or the last Class C. I was through there last year .. Class C I think was obviously not high enough so they didn't have to ask.

When we piped and wired the Hamilton Standard lot they had the cameras with windshield washer arms and fluid. Those were powerful cameras and this was way back.. The guy that watched them was telling a few stories lol They were powerful enough ( according to the guy ) that they could zoom in on a license that someone was reading in a car in the lot... maybe yes maybe no..

We totally agree. If the NPS says 12-8 why bother to chance riding down the middle of the road or knocking off an air cond by staying in your lane. Just plan a minor detour.
