Mattress suggestions

I know this subject has been beat to death in other forums but wanted to see if anyone here can offer any advice before I spend 600.00 or better on a decent mattress. We have the usual mattress over the engine bay area in the rear of the coach laying on plywood - which is hinged for access to the engine compartment. No box spring. The regular house mattress currently there is the softest Sealy you can buy but it's still like laying on a brick, which I assume is due to the lack of a box spring. Due to our layout I can use either the RV queen size or regular house queen size, I have no length constraints. At home I have a 90% waveless waterbed which I sleep well on, but it doesn't even feel like a waterbed, you wouldn't even know that it was one. I also sleep well on Sleep Number beds at about the medium settings.

In other forums I've read that the memory foam mattresses are softer when placed over wood versus conventional mattresses which require a box spring to operate as intended.

I'll go to some of these local places and lay the mattress on the floor to see how they feel and try them out first but I value advice from the members here before I embark.

Any advice would be welcomed.

I just went threw this adventure and bought a medium firmness memory foam mattres. When shoping make sure it has at least 4" of memory foam of at least 4lbs per qubic ft. The firmness is deturmand by what the rest of the thickness is made of. In my aplication the mattress can be no thicker than 9" so I was resticted by that. The thicker the mattress the more comfortable it will be and there are a lot more choices out there that are 10" or more thick. I bought mine from Overstocks.com for $369 plus $1 shipping. I will let you know how it works out. John

If you know that you sleep well on a Sleep Number Bed then that's the one I would get. We have a Sleep Number in our Monaco and we liked it so well we bought one for the house.

Mattress preference and selection is extreemely subjective. If I were you, I would go with the "mattress on the floor" test. Only YOU can decide which one works best for you. Sweet dreams......

We bought our 12" thick Queen foam mattress at Costco, on sale for $599. It made so much difference that it is hard to believe. I now sleep without tossing and turning all night. The great thing about Costco is their no questions asked return policy.

We have had Sleep Number in last two MH and one at home . Love them. Best mattress I hav ever slept on.

Just go down to Bed Bath and Beyond or Wal Mart and get a 3" memory foam topper...

Makes all the difference in the world for <$200

We tried the foam topper first and it was an improvement. When we decided to replace the King with a Queen we bought the 12" foam mattress. The 12" foam is far superior to the regular mattress with the topper.

Go with the SleepNumber that allows a different setting on each side of the bed. We have one in the motorhome and one in the house.

We are currently renovating our master bath so the master bedroom with its SleepNumber is out of commission. I'm sleeping most nights out in the motorhome because our guest room mattress stinks.

Sleep Number beds are an excellent mattress but they can be kind of expensive. I had a 2000 Adventurer that had a fold out sofa bed up front with a really terrible thin mattress. It was so bad that I had to put cardboard under it to stiffen up the bed so I could sleep decent. I just happened to find this Air Dream mattress that I bought and man what a difference in sleeping and the price was right.
