May miss this summer trip due to torn rotator cuff

Just had a MRI and found a torn rotator cuff. According to info it seems recovery after surgery may take 6 months, so there goes my summer travels. The wife fell 10 weeks ago, broke her arm, and now looking at shoulder surgery as soon as arm heals. May even wipe out our fall travels. Hasn't been a good year so far.

Anyone had this type of surgery and was able to travel safely in less time? Also, haven't been able to decide on the surgeon yet. Anyone have any experience with an expert shoulder surgeon in the Wichita, Ks area? Had a good hip surgeon there about 5 years ago but don't know a good shoulder surgeon.

I don't know about shoulders, but we "hopefully " find out Wednesday what's cracked in my knee. So I can relate to summer plans up in the air feeling. Best of luck to you!

My neighbor just had a complete shoulder rebuild. He was driving in a week, feeling great in four weeks and now at six weeks, very happy he had it done. He said it's the first time in years he's been able to wash his opposite arm pit. He won't be doing any push ups for awhile, but is ready to get back into RVing. He's 63 years old. Our other camping friends had is done three weeks later, he's 66. He was not optimistic right after surgery, but is finding that he's feeling better fast.

Allen.....have a good attitude, don't over do it and should be able to carefully RV in three months. Since we've talked in the past, I know that you're older than I am. With that said, I look to get as much RVing out of every year as I can as I get older. The ability to RV will go by pretty fast.

I've had three rotator cuff surgeries. Two on the right side and one on the left. The severity of the tear will be the determining factor. Might right side is a complete disability issue with both surgeons. I have some range of motion but no strength what so ever. I had fallen 16' and it wasn't a matter of a tear, it was totally detached and retracted into my back. The surgery on my left side thankfully was successful and between the surgery, recovery and PT it was a six month process. One suggestion I have is after surgery is Don't fall behind on taking your meds. Good luck and hope it all works out for you.

cuff

Steve is exactly right on "depending on tare". Mine was so bad all doc could do was sew muscles together. Tore right away. Need other one done but trying to build up using exercise. It is a ugly surgery for sure. Good luck

May miss this summer trip due to torn rotator cuff

I tore mine 18 years ago and was all set to have surgery. I was advised by a Nurse not to go through with it ( as it had a large failure rate ) before trying rehab. I cancelled the surgery and did a few weeks of rehab followed up by in home self exercises ( I have every color exercise band ) and haven’t had any pain since. I had another MRI done three years ago. It’s still torn but it doesn’t interfere with any activity.

My wife had this and her tears were bad. One was torn off of the bone. The biggest issue with her was the huge shoulder sling she had to wear for weeks. It was impossible to do many day to day things. She slept in the recliner most of the time. Then the PT started where she had to go 3 times a week. The surgery was easy compared to the recovery.

We had scheduled the pickup of our new Newmar months prior to the surgery which ended up 10 days after the surgery. We also planned for a trip for several weeks to check out the new rig, but all we could do was get it and come right back home.

I've been through 2 rotator cuff surgeries on same shoulder, one a total rebuild involving pig ligaments. MY best advice: follow therapy orders and perform the exercises like your livelihood depends on it-because it does! I did not, and have been paying for it ever since, with no chance of rebuilding shoulder strength now, too much scar tissue has formed which blocks ROM and lifting my arms above my head. My only remedy now is artificial shoulder replacement, and I'm too old for that @ 76.

I had my right shoulder replaced in 2016 and after 3 weeks I was fairly mobile but was not allowed to drive until 6 weeks for the car and 12 weeks for the Moho. Did the PT and works great, doing the left one in two weeks and I am just shy of 75.

I had rotator cuff surgery on my left shoulder. The surgery was easy, the physical therapy was murder!

This was about three years ago and I don't remember how long it was before I could drive.

I had to have the right labrum reattached and is anchored by 5 pieces of stainless, and the torn tendons fixed. I was back in my office in a week, and completely out of the sling in less than three. Right after I got out of the sling I broke my pinky finger on the other hand getting a full size spare out of one of those tiny Dodge Charger trunks.

I am just finishing up with rotator cuff surgery. The surgery was in August 2018. Six weeks of completely immobilized right arm followed by 6 weeks of range-of-motion therapy followed by 4 weeks of strength training. Last Dr visit was yesterday. I can do most anything except heavy lifting. Can take up to a year to get totally back to normal. I have been driving since the sling was taken off after the first 6 weeks.

Follow Dr.'s orders, don't rush the recovery. I could not sleep at night due to the pain. In fact the whole process, in my case, has been more of an inconvenience. Almost no pain since day of surgery.

I had major rotator cuff surgery years ago (totally tore 3 of the 4 muscles off) . I was in a sling for 4 months and off work for 7 months. I could not do anything (not even hold a cup) with my arm that was in the sling . It took over a yr to fully recover. Follow the advice of your doctor and therapist . I was able to have a full recovery and still have full use of my arm.

Due to Severe Osteoarthritis damage (Bone on bone for many years, nothing left of rotator knob or cap), have had Both shoulders fully replaced with complete artificial joints (the full monte on both, one after the other)
When I could successfully take care of toiletries without help, they then did the other shoulder.

4 weeks each in a sling, followed with another 8 weeks each of PT..
(NOTE! DO NOT try to be a hero and do more than the Surgeon & Therapist direct you to do!!! It just takes time to heal..

Could drive after losing the slings.. barely...and improved as time progressed.

IF I'm careful can lift 75lbs up to shoulder height using both arms.
Forced me to retire earlier than I had planned.
I can now sleep all night without the continual ache..
My hips are up next for replacements..
