MH will drive with slide open!!!!!!

My wife wanted to visit a casino about 100 miles from our home last Sat. It is a nice one that has a large parking lot across the highway that you can park MH if you want. I was not into giving any cash away so the pups and I went and opened the LR slide watched some Tv and took a nice nap. About 1:30 she called ready to go. I was really sleepy so did a quick check and fired her up. RV not DW. it was real foggy so i started out, drove about 100 feet across the parking lot. I looked in the mirror and really came awake that slide was still out. I did not think the MH would start or move with slide out. Guess I was wrong

Richard. The slide out has an Ignition kill switch but it's function is the opposite of expected. If the ignition is on the room will not operate. If the room is open the Ignition and engine work. (At least mine works that way.)
In addition there are interlocks (pin switches) in the compartment doors below the slide. If a door is open the slide is disabled. I never trust this, and always look before moving the slide either way.

No interlock that I know of on ours (but I haven't tested it either), in fact Newmar says to have the engine running, or the generator running or be plugged into show power when operating the slides.

Wow, thats kind of scary!! especially in a parking lot with lightstands and other parked units. Glad you didn't have a worse ending to your story.

Mine will drive with slide out. Have left it out while repositioning at campsite.

AND...antennaes up, and cords still connected. water hoses hoked up. storage doors with stuff falling out, slide trays in storage that slde out....on and on.

PPP=PPP always has always will...gear down and locked VERY important. No different for the walk around before begining every trip.

Glad nothing got bent. To my knowledge, my rig has no such interlocks to prevent moving with slides extended. A quick check of the mirrors before putting it in gear should do the trick.

Maybe labeled clothes pins on the steering wheel. That's what my Dad does ( I probably should too!)

Have seen rigs move to another site with slides out. Good way to knock the slides out of kilter.

Be careful out there, friends!

I met a guy who drove hundreds of miles with a slide out because it would not retract. I wouldnt have moved it from the campground until it was fixed!

We were at NewMar having warranty work done on our 2011 DS; when we finished the factory tour and was walking across the street lo and behold her comes our MH down the road with driver side full wall slide out. About had a heart attack!! so I guess it is OK for short distances.

Rule number one. NEVER put it in drive until you have done your circle check. Looks like you got luck this time, but next time you might be dragging something down the interstate that you forgot. You could have had a flat tire or any number of things. We are only human so best we try to overcome our handicap with common sense. good luck and happy camping.

If you are like me. I only make a mistake once. You will never forget the slide again. It will be something else. I put my jacks up and the warning bell stopped. I didn't check to make sure they were up. Getting ready to leave and DW says put up your jacks. Uh! Now I verify everything visually. We just keep learning.
The thread above said gear down and locked. 3 in the green.
I had three I. The green. And my nose gear still collapsed. No checklist is absolute.
