Mission TX RV retirement home?

Spending a few days at Bentsen Palm RV Park in Mission, TX - we arrived just following the mass exodus of the Winter Texans so the park is relatively empty. Having never spent anytime here we are pleasantly surprised with the area. We toured the Retama Village today which got us thinking "hmmmmm, could this be our retirement future?" We currently live in NM and looking for the downsized home with a place we can store our RV (5'er) along side a small house (casita). There are all sorts of options here, whether it's a concrete pad that houses a small storage shed, or a small one-bedroom casita, all the way up to RV patio homes (with covered RV storage). We're pretty impressed so far with all the amenities, the location to the World Birding Center, the Rio Grande Valley State Park, Gulf of Mexico, etc. but again, we're newbies and only exploring the area. Any of you live here, toured here, spent time here? Looking for advice/counsel. Thanks!!

PS - sitting on a (level wow!) concrete patio, with a gentle wind blowing, listening to the birds (and music on the bluetooth), enjoying a glass of wine and wondering....why would we leave?

Just left 03/27/14 been going since 1991 off and on...We stayed up and down the RGV and go to the dentist in Mexico...During the Winter season you stay busy with Music Jams , cards games, board games I really love it but in the summer it is very very hot...Give it a try next winter....

We did Retama Village the winter of 2010-11 and really enjoyed it. We rented the lot from the owner and it was very reasonable, as I recall around $600/mo during January and less for the months before and after.

We did a lot of day trips up and down the RGV and rode our bicycles a lot in Bentsen State Park next door. The birds were just amazing as was the new World Butterfly Center nearby. We saw and did too many things to mention them all here.

Loved the people that both own and rent there, with most of the people there being owners. Very friendly and inclusive and very active. The prices for a finished lot with casita is very reasonable. We would have bought there at the time but have family responsibilities at home that we have to work into our schedule, plus we wanted to be free to do a lot of traveling when we can. In the future we will probably purchase one of the RV sites that have the 12'x24' Coach House on it.

Here's a look inside some of those Coach Houses (storage sheds).

"Why would we leave"? In Texas, we call it SUMMER (as previously mentioned).

We spent last season at Bentsen Palm RV on a super site (708). We really enjoyed the area. You get treated better than in Florida. The park is first class. But I would never buy in the park for fear you could not sell when you need to move on. We seriously debated going back next year but it is far from Michigan and the wind and dirt get on your nerves. We also found the area to be lacking in entertainment after the touring acts went home at the end of February. You could do worse.
