Your problem is BANKS.. now some banks offer FREE ATM's to their customers and some have branches in many (But not all) places.

If you were to transfer your mony to a CREDIT UNION (Choose carefully). Here is what happens.

Credit Unions, many are Co-Ops. that means as a "Member" YOU are actually an OWNER, your savings balance is called "Shares" for just that reason, 1.00 per chare.

Second, and this is why you need to choose carefuly.. Many Credit unions belong to a larger Co-Op type affair, or if you ike assoication of credit unions. If you are a member of any of the members, you can use the ATM's belonging to other member credit unions (But not all credit unions belong)

I have accounts with both a Federal Credit Union, (I wont' name) and a bank. the bank allows me to deposit checks from anywhere, any time using my smart phone as an ATM. Else I'd close that account.

The credit union has only a couple branches and a few ATMs all in S.E. Michigan. I"m in Upstsate SC but the local "State Credit Union" is FREE to me.. same with many others.. Though the credit union ATM in Darien GA was not.

Another possibility.. Most grocery stores and so on now take Debit cards and many can gibve you up to 100 back with purchase... No charge.. used to be a charge for that but most now absorb it.

Take the advice of calling your credit card company before the trip. I had several cards frozen in Canada. Now anytime we plan to travel two or more states from home, we call.
We did. We called the CC company before our trip. Told them how long we would be traveling thru Canada. They said that notification would be good for 3 months. Two weeks into the trip (in Canada) while fueling up, card gets frozen. So I'm in the fuel line, on my phone trying to "un-freeze" my CC. Tell them again "I'm in Canada, and need the use of my card to buy fuel". Again I tell them my travel plans. They "reassure" me I'm good to go. 2-3 days later, frozen again...On the phone again....Happened a total of 4 times while in Canada.

We use maybe $300-$400 cash in 3-4 months and most of that is for farmers markets that don't take CC's. 99% of our purchases are on the CC, we carry three as we travel his hers and ours just in case one gets compromised. Tell the company where you are going and no problems. Have had STOP put on a couple times for what they considered questionable purchases on the road and a phone call freed it up again. Used CC in Alaska, Canada, Mexico, China with no problems. Get on the computer once a month and pay the bill, must preset-up, an account with the CC company, on their site where the $$ to pay the bill come from. Enter the amount confirm from account, set the date, hit enter, write down the confirmation #. Once setup take maybe 2-3 minutes. I do carry cash, one never knows when one needs a new toy.

Here's a my story on CCs and foreign fees--went to Canada/Ak in '16, carried my Capitol One in reserve (no foreign exchange fee). Blew engine in Vanderhoof, BC/CA and had to have new long block at Ford. $22k and called Cap 1 first telling them it was coming in--Ford dealer had never done that large on CC--charge flew through no problem. Looked at CC statement statement--the charge on card was only $16xxx, 'saved' $5k by having the engine blow in CA.......checked cost in US, same $22k estimate. No exchange fee, either.
Wasn't easy swallowing the cost, but saving $5k made it easier.
Carry about $1000 cash, change some at a BANK soon as you cross the border into CA.
Work off the no-fee card first, cash if need to.
All the stores in CA will take US cash, but many only go 1:1 ratio, so you lose on that.
