Motorhome Magazine surprises me!!

Just read the September issue of Motorhome Magazine and was surprised by the truthfulness and honesty of it's testing of Thor's Touring 45' Tuscany (which was on the cover of the magazine.) I started a thread last December on a survey they made rating the Norcold the #1 refrigerator in it's survey and many came in and bashed the magazine for it's biased Good Sam owner and the biased opinions on the products that advertise with them of which I tended to agree.

Motorhome Magazine Readers Choice Awards....

Right up front they downgraded it for lack of quality control on it's fit and finish. ie; gouges in the tile at the slide, loosening windshield adhesion, a loose drivers side mirror that spins in the wind resulting in this comment.."these things shouldn't happen on a $12,000 economy car, let alone a luxury coach", bad instrument placing in the drivers cockpit, non-functioning rear and side view cameras, loose galley cabinet and pocket doors that came crashing out in a left hand turn because of bad hardware and construction methods, a kitchen with only a two burner stove that wouldn't work, a master bedroom with no nightstand on either side of the bed with cabinets above the bed that had no function or purpose, storage in the bedroom that is "weird", a master bath closet's tiny mirrors and not big enough to hang cloths so "hope you like folding", the power windshield shade in the master bedroom wouldn't close requiring them to "tape a bed sheet to it's edge, no shade for the entry door so "we had to resort to a bathroom towel", and "the expanding sofa with air bed was so awful, we didn'ty even attempt to use it. It was a bear to deploy, it didn't lay flat and folded mattress array strapped to its backrest would intimidate a NASA engineer. Putting the whole mess back in place requires a degree in geometry." They concluded that the Tuckany 45AT was a nice equipped MH but that it would be a lot nicer with "better quality control and more attention paid to the way people use a coach like this". Wow I have never read such a truthful test in any magazine like this. Kind of rebuilds my faith.....a little.

Yep, read the same survey. For a top of the line coach it certainly needs a lot of QC effort. However, I've read horror stories about all manufacturers. Personally I would not seriously consider a Thor product at this point. Obviously many many people do!?? Correct me if I'm wrong but they are undergoing or have completed a large expansion in IN. So their selling plenty of product???

i could never get in to Motorhome Magazine / or TV shows

to many ADDs trying to get you to buy a RV and not much info on RVing

in a 1 hr TV show about going RVing you may get 5 mins of where to take a RV praks/somewhere to eat / you know info we really want as most of us all ready have a RV ... then add 15 mins of some one cooking at the end

but like you said it is good to see truthfulness from some where that could play a major roll in change

While Thor sells lots of product to new RVers, lots of fancy items and glitz, we have seen all too many horror stories concerning Thor products. One that sticks in my mind is the saga by 93Mastercraft concerning his Palazzo MH. I believe he is on his "Third Replacement" unit. I have always viewed TMC products as strictly "Entry Level".

That article surprised me as well. Nice to see the bad along with the good, which always gets reported.

Thumbs up I like it

I have been getting this mag for the last year. I feel it is quit informative from it's travel articles done by real life RV travelers to thier how to and product reports. The testing of coach's on road trips and actual camping does a good job of shaking out issues with products as well. Most of the articles I have seen on the motorhomes do seem to have good truthfull reports. The Good Sam adds seem to be a plenty but that's to be expected.

From personal experience, I'm, as others have mentioned, surprised at the honesty of the report, but hardly surprised at reports of poor quality products from Thor. Just because a unit is an entry level unit does not have to be a poor quality unit. At $95 to 120k for entry level class units in this day and time, I don't expect to take home a pile of junk. I've owned three entry level units to include a one year old used '11 Winnebago Vista 26P, followed by the '13/14 new '13 Thor 34F, full wall slide, and a most recently, to replace the Thor and it's problems after five months, a new '14 Itasca 35F. I've only had minor problems with the Winnebago products. In the five months I owned the Thor, I started with a two page listing of problems in additions to problems with the slide which were never repaired to my satisfaction.

I had only read positive reviews from MH magazine before and wondered if they were just trying to be nice to possible advertisers. I am going to keep an eye out for any other such reviews. Really appreciate the honest reviews than always hearing how "everything is so thoughtfully placed or designed"

I have never seen in 11 years a review this critical of any other coach.

Actually they found some flaws with the Winnebago two months prior. But like you said not as critical.

A surprise? Maybe.
I had a Thor that had excellent form, fit and function. Others did not. With a broad brush the same can be said of any make including 1st hand info I got from owners of everything from AC to Entegra to Newmar, etc, etc.
Some read and believe.
Some read between the lines and make subjective decisions.
I dont believe any biased ad rag. Well, I dont read them, so.....

I agree with CampDaven. Don't paint with a broad brush A friend has a 5 month old Fleetwood Discovery, he is quite upset with the lack of quality and workmanship.
